Safety

A walk audit was conducted by NC State Extension Regional Nutrition Extension Associate Lauren Morris. The walk audit took place in downtown Louisburg to determine what improvements need to be made to encourage a safe walking path in our community.

Bicycle safety was taught to 138 Pre-K students across Franklin County Schools. Each student was gifted a brand new bicycle helmet to ensure that they could practice bicycle safety at home. The bicycle helmets were granted to Franklin County N.C. Cooperative Extension by the NCDOT Bicycle Helmet Initiative.

Nutrition

Benefits of Gardening Nutrition workshop participants planted vegetable seeds for home gardening projects on May 9th.

Cooking Class

Women in Ag Local Foods Farm Tour

Eight Franklin County farms opened for tours Sunday, May 14th. Produce, plants, flowers, meats, mushrooms while some farms also had food and entertainment. For more information about Women in Ag and Local Foods, contact Extension Agent Martha Mobley, 919-496-3344.

Kara Dinker from Cary, NC enjoys a fresh picked organic "Ruby June" strawberry at a farm stop. She visited with her sister and parents and enjoyed learning about how and where her food comes from... on the farm.

Internship Farm Tour

Twenty students from twelve different colleges and universities across the country went on a tour of Meadow Lane Farm in Louisburg, as part of the ASPIRE Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) summer internship program. They toured farms on May 23-24 in Eastern NC to kick off the summer with a grounding of meeting farmers and understanding what is happening on farms firsthand.

Farmers Market

The Franklin County Farmers Market opened for the season May 5th. Homemade Strawberry ice cream was served. The Farmers Market is located at 137 Shannon Village, Louisburg.
