Watson's Bay a stunning ferry ride!
Well.....today was their wedding anniversary,...so they had a full day planned.....but they still let me tag along!
They were up early....and M took them to the train station.....and so they took a train ride to Wynyard Station! They have booked in to. Swanky hotel for the night......something about last minute something....and so they went there first to see if they could leave their luggage so they didn't have to trail it about all day! So...they went in.....and the guy on reception said that the room was ready already and they had been upgraded and would also get free internet! So.....they went up to their room before setting out! The room was very nice and would certainly do!
So they left the hotel and the first half of the day would be spent in one of their favourite places.....Watson's Bay! They needed to take a ferry from Circular Quay to Watson's Bay. It is a great journey and offers stunning views of the city! They walked to Circular Quay and went straight to the wharf for the ferry as it was due to leave! The ferry was one of the speed cat ferries and would be a quick journey! It is a few kilometres out to the bay and it is situated right at 'The Heads' - the entrance to the harbour! The ferry backed out and once it was turned round they got great views of the Opera House and The Bridge....before speeding off across the harbour as you watch them get smaller and smaller. You pass Fort Denyson and before you know it the bridge has disappeared from sight and the opening of the harbour can be seen. The sun was shining and the sky was blue and so the water was sparkling as the ferry danced across the surface of the water.
On arrival at Watson's Bay they went for morning coffee at 'Dunbar House' - apparently one of Sydney's 'places' to go! It was very nice....but by 11am they seemed to be sold out of all their cakes and muffins! Perhaps they should order more?
From here they set off to walk out to the South Heads.....which should offer spectacular views along the way. They pass 'Doyle's on the Beach' again one of Sydney's places to go for lunch! Doyle's is an upmarket fish and chip restaurant......with many other fine dishes available.....but Doyle's is a Sydney highlight that everyone should experience! However....more of that later!
The sun was shining....it was very warm and the walk round from Watson's Bay was amazing! This is millionaire territory and the houses here would sell for mega prices when they come on the market! The walk meandered round the cliffs and paths led down to one or two very secluded beaches.....including one of Sydney's 'nururist' beaches! However......there appeared to be no one there today....but further round there was one guy down on the water side who seemd quite happy to pose and wander about with no clothes on,
Out at 'The Heads' stunning views were on offer from each direction! The city skyline in the distance was simply stunning, the view across The Heads to Manly was great and then the vast opening to the harbour stretched before them and the vast ocean powered waves constantly on to the cliffs below! A pod of dolphins was exiting the harbour after a foray in to the city....and they broke up above the water as they headed out in to the ocean!
This is truly a stunning place to visit....the houses....the scenery and the city in the distance just all add up to make the perfect location! They made their way back to the bay and they would soon be having their fish and chips for lunch - at Doyle's on the Wharf......the take away and not the fancy restaurant! As ever it was heaving with people and they waited for their boxes and got a seat and enjoyed some of the best fish and chips you will get.....and with the best views to enjoy them by! It was also very warm....but some were still persisting with the heavy coats and scarves! How they can do this....I still don't understand!
After lunch they took the ferry back to Circular Quay so they would be in time for part two of their anniversary day - The Bridge Climb!
The journey back offers views of the city and again as you speed towards the Opera House and the bridge you continue to marvel at the sheer beauty of the location! The waterway is a constant buzz of boats and ferries vieing for space and the smaller boats must feel the constant effect of the wash created by the ferries! The Manly ferry is the king of the ferries here and it is a lot bigger than the other boats! This will be one of the trips they will take next week!
However, the ferry eases into Circular Quay and another happy group of tourists and locals alight and disappear into the buzz that is downtown Sydney!
This has been a great trip.....but for them was only the first part of the day they had planned! Anyone travelling to Sydney really should have a trip to Watson's Bay on their itinerary! Not only do you get to visit a great location....but you get to see Sydney from where it is seen best.....from the water! And....if the sun is shining and the sky is blue.....then there is nothing better!
They both wondered how long it would be before they are both back at the bay and have the chance to visit Doyle's for this lunch? Let's hope it's not too long!
