February 12, 2022 - Homecoming weekend ushered in a new era for Mason Recreation as they held not only their annual Homecoming Alumni Social, but also their Inaugural Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
Held at The Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, VA, this occasion was shared by Mason Recreation alumni, current staff, and the hall of fame inductees and their loved ones.
A way to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments and legacy of their alumni, the idea for the Hall of Fame was first brought up by Paul Bazzano, Mason Recreation’s Assistant Director for Competitive Sports.
“It was an idea that originally started with wanting to recognize our Intramural Sports officials and their accomplishments at regionals and nationals. After doing some research on what others schools were doing... we kind of shifted gears on how we could involve more people across the department."
With 70 people in attendance, the Hall of Fame ceremony recognized the following individuals for their accomplishments and service to Mason Recreation: Chris Carr, Leah Ching, Willie Ehling, Ebonie Gibbs, Trent Houston, Mickey McDade, Men's Rugby Club, Brian Money, Jim Murphy, Bob Spousta, Donovan Tyson, and Merrissa Vault.
“The inaugural Hall of Fame event was an occasion that I will never forget. It was an amazing feeling to catch up in fellowship with many of the leaders and professional staff who helped mold and inspire me to be the man I am today," said Donovan Tyson, Mason Recreation Alumni and Hall of Fame Inductee.
One of the largest student employers on campus, Mason Recreation has long been a proponent of developing career-ready student leaders.
With more than 30 years of student staff involvement and excellence, the Mason Recreation Hall of Fame will have no shortage of inductees to add to their Hall of Fame in the years to come.
