A message from our Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

I do hope you and your families are well?

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending Wardley Hall, the Bishop of Salford’s residence in Worsley. We took 10 of our Chaplaincy team to receive the Silver 'Faith in Action' award from Bishop John. The award reflects the outstanding work undertaken by our Chaplaincy team in fundraising, social action, Catholicity and in caring for those more vulnerable than ourselves. The Bishop was really interested in our work and congratulated the team, led by Mrs Garfin and Mrs Rouse, on their achievements. Well done to all our Chaplaincy team on securing this School award.

There are only five weeks left now, before we break for the summer holidays, (Thursday 21st July at 1.30pm) and we are busy preparing for the end of the academic year and the new one, which will begin on Wednesday 7th September at 9.00am for our pupils.

We have planned for a range of activities for pupils in these last 5 weeks, including a KS3 Festival, a fun sports afternoon for all pupils, residential opportunities for Post 16 students, a performance afternoon and class end of year trips; all great activities for pupils to celebrate their successes this year.

Next week, we welcome back into School the Teach Rex company, who will deliver a deep learning day for all pupils on Thursday. The children are certainly looking forward to meeting Rex, their dinosaur, in the workshops, which will develop pupil IT and literacy skills and improve their knowledge on sustainability and ecological issues.

Also, on Thursday, we will have our Leavers service and celebration for a few pupils who officially leave us next week. It will be a sad occasion in many ways, but we will certainly be celebrating our pupil achievements with them before they leave.

We start our transition work for September next week also, when we welcome into school, on Wednesday evening, the parents of pupils who will join SJV in September. We look forward to welcoming the children and their parents who now begin their journey with us.

Can I remind you please that School is closed next Friday, 24th June? The closure is to recognise the Queen’s Jubilee celebration, which fell in the Whit break. I am sure the staff and pupils will welcome the opportunity for a long weekend with their families.

The collation of our reports is going well and we are planning to send the Annual Report home to you in early July. It is certainly a busy time for us all in school and we appreciate, as always, the excellent behaviour and cooperation of our pupils and the continued support of their parents and carers.

Have a great weekend,

Mr A Moloney

Headteacher

Please note, we have made a change to the School Calendar for the summer term 2022.

Friday 24th June is now an additional School holiday for St John Vianney School. The School will be closed on this date.

This additional date is in lieu of the national holiday for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration, which falls during the Whit break on June 3rd 2022.

The term dates for 2022-23 have now been approved by the Governing Body and are now available on the School website.

Class 9

Another great visit to forest school this week for class 9 where we did activities based on the story The Gruffalo.

Our Catholic School

What an exciting week for our Chaplaincy team! Pre-pandemic I started the paperwork to gain the pin for the Bronze Faith In Action Award. The programme rewards active service in schools and parishes, encouraging young people to take their service into the wider community and accept greater responsibility for their faith in action. In March of this year, I was able to invite Lorraine Leonard (Head of GIFT teams and youth services) into one of our chaplaincy meeting and we able to review our application

We were then awarded the silver award! This week we were invited over to Wardley Hall to accept the award from Bishop John Arnold; fantastic achievements and a wonderful reflection of our Chaplaincy team. We had a four tour of Wardley Hall and had afternoon tea, we had a wonderful time.

Our spiritual focus this week in SJV is considering the Trinity. Scripture reminds us the importance of the Trinity when we pray; ‘Every time we make the sign of the cross, we draw closer to the great mystery of the Holy Trinity’. Pope Francis

We are preparing our leavers Service, which will be on the 23rd June- so we only have 4 days left it’s a bitter-sweet moment for us all. The chaplaincy team are also practicing readings, bidding prayers for our final Mass of the year.

It was a very important time this week for our year 11 and post 16 leavers in RE. I had the pleasure of holding the moderation for the Salford Diocesan Certificate of Religious Education. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate the success with the others schools in the Diocese, as we looked at all the work they have done in the past 2/3 years.

With the rest of the school we continued to look at British Values and what it means for being a believer in God.

A few tips from our emotional and mental wellbeing team here at SJV.

As the weather gets warmer and we have longer days in the sunshine, it is good to reflect on ourselves and the ways in which the weather can affect our bodies and our moods.

Here are 5 ways in which the sun can impact our physical and mental health:

1. Increased vitamin D

2. Improved mood

3. Higher quality sleep

4. Stronger bones

5. Lower blood pressure

Faith In Action award

10 of our lead chaplains had the pleasure of going to Wardley Hall to receive the Sliver Faith in Action award on behalf of the full chaplaincy team From Bishop John Arnold. The award rewards active service in schools and parishes, encouraging young people to take their service into the wider community and accept greater responsibility for their faith in action. It encourages them to shine the light of faith upon their experience, reflecting upon how this shapes and moulds them as young people.

I started the process of gaining this award pre covid - and initially we were going for the bronze award. We were finally able to invite Lorraine in from the Diocese to look at our award at Easter 2022. On reflection on the work and the hours we have done we are able to go for and receive the silver award!

Bishop John Arnold said "The Faith in Action Award Scheme is a welcome encouragement to young people to actively develop their relationship with God, to deepen their faith and put that faith into action for the common good.

Its strength lies in inviting young people and adults in schools and parishes to journey together in faith and to make a difference in the world around them; so that all might know the joy of the Gospel.”

We were able to spend the morning at the ‘Laudato Si' Centre, which is an exciting new project at Wardley Hall, which aims to promote Pope Francis key message on the environment and in our responsibility to protect it.

The team really enjoyed our morning at the Laudato centre and we learnt a lot, the team can’t wait now to work towards their gold award 😊

Enjoy your Weekend!
