TMBS News February 2022

Year 7 News

Year 7 enjoyed a fun afternoon on the last day before Christmas with an "it's a knockout" style assembly. Tutor groups went head to head to complete challenges until there were two finalists. After a lot of effort and even more noise, Mr Humphreys and Miss Stokes battled it out for the chance to win the Christmas Champions 2021 trophy.

Congratulations go to 7D! We ended the term with a Christmas karaoke that I can only describe as AWESOME!

Inter-form continues to be a popular event for the year group. Competition remains high but with another outstanding performance from 7E they won the top points for TMBS' Got Talent. They enjoyed a Christmas film afternoon with 7B who won the year group's best PD for the term! This half term tutor group challenge is to prepare and deliver a speech on wellbeing. I am really looking forward to hearing them in assembly soon.

KS3 helped to spread some Christmas cheer again this year with beautifully written letters and handmade hampers to local residents. Students wrote poems, told jokes and shared positive experiences they have had and what they were looking forward to over the Christmas period. It was an absolute pleasure to deliver these and they were gratefully received by members of our local community. On our return to school in the new year we were overwhelmed to find a pile of thank you letters and cards in the post. Kindness really does have a ripple effect.

Year 7 buzzing about books

The Market Bosworth School Library has teamed up with Bookbuzz to provide each of our Year 7 students with a free book of their choice. Bookbuzz is a new reading programme which gives schools the opportunity to offer their students the choice of a book from a list of specially selected titles. The school librarians, Mrs Holt and Miss Luker, have funded the programme so each student will receive a book to keep.

The aim of Bookbuzz is to inspire excitement about reading and discovering new books and authors. Students were shown a video of various authors talking about their books, and were then able to choose a book from a list of 15 different titles.

To find out more about this year’s titles, and other books that your child might enjoy, do visit the website where you can also find useful links about reading and writing, and fun writing activities that you can do at home with your child: www.bookbuzz.org.uk

Year 9 go to space!

As part of our science curriculum, on Friday 14th January, 147 Year 9 students went to the National Space Centre. As part of the trip students got the opportunity to work through the six interactive galleries including access to the 42m high rocket tower as well as experience a show in the UK’s largest planetarium.

Students really enjoyed and valued the experience and their attitude and behaviour throughout the trip was exemplary, showing how much of a credit they are to the school. Excellent work Year 9! Mr Arnold

Year 10 Inter-form

For their inter-form competition Year 10 tutor groups competed in creating a "Where's Wally?" scene. There were some fantastic entries, here are the 'best hidden Wally' and 'most creative' winners.

Food, Glorious Food

Hospitality and Catering have again had a busy half term cooking up a storm. Themes have included rice, enriched breads and the recently received wild Alaskan pink salmon was this half term's final practical.

Children's Mental Health Week

This week is Children’s Mental Health Week (7-13 February 2022). This year's theme is Growing Together. Through assemblies and tutor activities, students have been looking at how they have grown and how they can help others to grow.

Throughout the week Year 7 have looked at learning new skills and sharing those skills with one another; how they have adapted to change and new situations that have helped them grow and learn resilience; and completed their own growth shapes, like the example below.

Year 9 have looked at their 'best self' and reflected on times when they have felt at their best, but also acknowledging times when things didn't go to plan and how their feelings compared, what they learnt about themselves and how this could help them to grow.

The link below is to a video that looks at the importance of looking after your mental health and where Young People can access support.

ATTENDANCE

Our overall school attendance is 92%, we have taken a real hit with attendance due to COVID up to now this year. All we can ask is for students to keep trying hard to keep themselves safe, wash hands regularly, and follow guidance given. We hope that you continue to support us in our endeavours.

Attendance Reminder

  • Please remember to call in on each day of absence when your child is off school.
  • For COVID cases please advise us on the first day of a positive result and follow the current government guidelines for returning to school. https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus Without confirmation of a positive result we are unable to provide work.
  • Please contact your child’s tutor or head of year if you feel that your child is missing too much school – interventions may help!
  • Please contact us if you have any concerns about your child’s attendance.

Careers Talks Are Back!

This half term we have had several exciting career talks held at TMBS by some of our TMBS Career Champions. Our Year 9, 10 and 11 students have had the opportunity to hear talks from a diverse array of careers including mechanical engineering, academia and photography. These have included:

  • Daniel Binns: A Project Manager at Taylor Woodrow
  • Amy Shore: A freelance automotive and lifestyle photographer
  • Dr Clare Roscoe: Senior Lecturer in Physical Activity and Health at the University of Derby
  • Guy Robinson: Battery Engineering Manager at Aston Martin
Clockwise from top left: Daniel Binns, Amy Shore, Guy Robinson & Dr Clare Roscoe

Thank you to all of our TMBS career champions for allowing our students to learn about your career pathway and current role. We enjoyed these informative and inspiring talks immensely!

TMBS hosts Leicestershire’s First Ever Spelling Bee

On February 4th, six Leicestershire schools competed in Leicestershire’s first ever Spelling Bee. After months of preparation with a list of over 1,000 words to memorise, eight TMBS students took part in the gruelling competition.

With three of our students making it into the finals (Thomas Cleaver, Grace Trinder-Oxley and Ollie Edwards), we were amazed at the brilliance and lexical genius of all of the students. Whilst Welland Park took the overall crown, we are thrilled to say that Ollie Edwards (Year 9 at The Market Bosworth School) beat the competition to get second place overall in the Year 9 and Year 10 competition.

The Spelling Bee was so popular with local schools that we’re looking to make it an annual event. Students can look out for more information on how to get involved with the team next academic year.

Fancy a Spelling Challenge? How many of the following can your family spell right, all taken from the word list this year:

  • Synaesthesia
  • Penitentiary
  • Seismologist
  • Synecdoche
  • Omniscient
  • Claustrophobia

PE Department Update

Netball County Champions

WOW! What a season it has been for the Yr 7 Netball Team. After very little competitive sport being played over the last two years it has been amazing to be back competing - and compete they did!

Having won all of their league matches it was time for the next round, in which they played Fullhurst winning 2-0 and accompanied by Miss Paterson and Miss Clark, while both Ms Armstrong and Mrs Donlan were struck down with Covid. This win meant that they were through to the next round, but with no female PE department, that had to be postponed until after Christmas.

The New Year came and so did the matches in very quick succession, Loughborough High (6-4), Castle Mead Academy (13-7) and we were heading to the final all in the space of less than one week.

The night of the finals arrived and we made our way over the Loughborough University Netball Centre, home of Loughborough Lightning. The seating was out, spectators ready and it was all very official, as nerves and excitement rose. Out onto court they stepped and the game began. The tension was unbearable for all those watching and at the end of the 3rd quarter it was 6-6, with the announcer stating that if it was a draw at full time, play would continue and it would come down to golden goal. It was neck and neck in the final quarter but as the final buzzer sounded The Market Bosworth School players and supporters erupted as they took the game 8-7 to become Yr 7 Leicestershire County Netball Champions.

This team has made us so proud and we have been blown away by their commitment and progress in such a short space of time. They have certainly created career highlights for both Mrs Donlan and Ms Armstrong and we look forward to supporting them in their Netball careers at TMBS.

A special mention has to also go to the Yr 7 parents, who have been such an amazing support along the way. They have been on the sidelines at every possible game and have kept the girls going and positive, they are very lucky to have such amazing support and so are the PE department. Thank you and here’s to next season!

Key Stage 3 Fitness

January to February half term sees our Key Stage 3 students move onto activities that test their individual resilience and creativity. In Boys' PE, we have been trialling the Les Mills online fitness package as part of our curriculum, which has been a roaring success, something we have now rolled out to our Key Stage 4 students.

The Les Mills fitness sessions have been centred on whole body fitness, using instructor led classes to engage students in different types of classes. These have included low impact interval training, low impact martial arts, low impact strength and an introduction to yoga. The engagement and response from our students has been very positive meaning we will continue incorporating the sessions into our fitness curriculum moving forward.

Extra-curricular Attendance

A huge thank you to all students who have continued to attend our extra-curricular activities, or have joined us for the first time this half term. As ever, Thursdays continue to be our most popular afternoon with over 40 Year 7 & 8 students staying to play Badminton and Table Tennis. In total, we have now had almost 300 different students attend our extra-curricular activities this year – thank you to all who have attended. After February half term, we change our activities again, moving on to Dodgeball and Table Tennis.

The plan for the year can be found on the school website: https://www.tmbs.leics.sch.uk/UsefulInfo/Extra-Curricular/

Year 10 GCSE PE

Our Year 10 GCSE PE students have made a promising start to the course. There are currently two groups in Year 10. The focus in theory lessons has been to work on Paper 1 during this academic year and be examined on this paper during their mock exams later on in the year. This equates to 30% of their final mark.

Both of the groups will have the opportunity to study netball, badminton, table tennis, trampolining and athletics during lesson time. In addition to this many of our students have played for the school football and netball teams and will be attending a moderation at The Market Bosworth Rugby Club in February.

Students will also be given the opportunity to compete against GCSE PE students in other schools during their lesson time to help build up evidence in their competition logs. We have netball and table tennis fixtures planned for this term. The first one took place last week. The two teams that played the netball fixture won 11-3 and 3-1.

In addition to these opportunities the students have also been attending their extra curricular club on a Tuesday night where they have been given the opportunity to play table tennis and badminton matches this half term. We have invited 3 ex GCSE students to the club who won the county badminton competition in 2020. Many thanks to Harrison Collins, Billy Hammond and Jack Passant for giving up their time. This will hopefully help to raise the standard of competition. Eppie Southern in Year 11 has also been assisting with playing and coaching the table tennis players. Many thanks Eppie, you are a superstar.

Finally a few students have been attending trampolining on a Tuesday lunchtime in preparation for a level 3 competition on the 8th February.

Year 11 GCSE PE

Year 11 GCSE students have had a very busy year. Similar to Year 10 there are two groups in this cohort. The focus in theory lessons at the start of the year was to complete the course prior to the mock exams. This enabled the students to sit both a paper 1 and paper 2 which equates to 60% of their final mark.

Despite interruptions to learning as a result of Covid the students managed to achieve this and secure some promising teacher assessed grades.

The practical element of the course has also been hindered somewhat with Covid restrictions. For a large proportion of Year 10 we were limited with the sports we could offer. However students have been very proactive in collating video evidence for their two sports to help support their teacher assessed grades. We are currently awaiting further guidance regarding the moderation process after the final deadline for NEA marks on March 31st 2022.

At the start of the year the students had the opportunity to take part in two athletic moderations at the Tamworth track. They also participated in netball and football moderations with Hastings Academy. In addition to this they also played in netball, football and basketball fixtures after school.

Similar to the Year 10s we have a series of fixtures and moderations planned with other schools during lesson time. These include: netball, table tennis and rugby.

Since the mock exams students have been working hard in lessons to complete their written piece of coursework - their AEP (Analysis and Evaluation of Performance). This equates to 10% of their final mark whereas their two sports are worth 15% each. This should be completed by February half term. All we then need to do is revise for the final exam and have NEA marks moderated.

Football success

After recently making her debut for Leicester City FC against Manchester City, GCSE PE student Ava Baker has been selected for the ENGLAND WU17 TRAINING CAMP at St George’s Park, Burton upon Trent between Thursday 17th February – Wednesday 23rd February 2022. Congratulations on this amazing achievement.

Tennis success

Year 11 GCSE PE student Josh Chauhan recently took part in a Grade 4 tennis tournament at Ashby Castle Lawn Tennis Club.

After progressing to the quarter finals, beating the fourth seed, he found himself up against the 2nd seed in the semi final. After a closely fought battle Josh narrowly missed out on a place in the final.

Josh was eventually awarded the fourth place spot, which is a great achievement in what is one of the biggest Leicestershire county tournaments. Well done Josh.

Cross Country success

On the 8th January, four students from TMBS took part in the Leicestershire and Rutland Cross-Country Championships at Burbage Common. Sophia Wrightam in Year 8 participated in the under 13s race, completing a total distance of 3km and finishing 10th overall. Lillie Holford (Year 9) competed in the under 15s girls category, running a distance of 4km and finishing 5th. In the under 17s girls race, Gracie-Rose Walters (Year 11) and Isabella Wrightam (Year 11) both ran 5km and finished 7th (Gracie) and 3rd (Isabella). In Athletics club team prizes, Gracie and her team came first whilst Isabella’s team came second. By finishing in third, Isabella also automatically qualified to represent Leicestershire at the inter-counties later this year, with all of the other TMBS runners being taken into consideration for their respective age group. Congratulations on this tremendous achievement.

Teamwork makes the dream work

Throughout this half-term students have been taking part in a ‘Sport Education’ season in their PE lessons. This has meant that students have been in fixed teams for the whole half-term and have had to adapt to a different sport each lesson including Handball, Orienteering and Run the Gauntlet. Each team have been responsible for creating a team name, a mascot, a poster and carrying out different individual roles. Each lesson, teams compete to earn points that have been awarded for teamwork, leadership, honesty, and results that all contribute towards their league standing. Students have excelled in their individual roles (e.g. Equipment managers, Captains, Managers and Publicity Managers). It has been excellent to see students being responsible for completing the jobs that are required for their role within the team and demonstrating fairness when officiating the different games themselves. Finally, here are a pair of outstanding Year 7 mascots cheering on their teams (extra points if they’re always watching!).

Anyone interested in playing girls' rugby?

On Sunday, 30th January 2022, Market Bosworth and Leicester Forest East under 13s girls rugby teams joined together as one team to play a match against Burton under 13s girls. This rugby club is said to have one of the best U13 girls teams across the entire Midlands region, and we won the match, relatively easily. At the end of the match, we were introduced to Emily Scarratt, a former TMBS student, who had been watching and supporting us during the second half. Emily Scarratt MBE plays as either centre or fullback for Loughborough Lightning and has played for England 95 times. She has won a rugby world cup, multiple six nations championships and in 2019 she was World Women's Rugby Union Player of the Year; meaning that she was the best women’s rugby player in the world. Scarratt grew up playing for LFE.

Market Bosworth RFC is wanting to recruit new players for all our teams from ages 6 to 18 including our U13 girls team (years 7&8). People of any ability can join, most of us have only been playing for less than a year and if you are completely new to the sport, you can easily catch up in a matter of training sessions. Our rugby family is inclusive, a wonderful friendly and supportive community and lots of fun. It is much safer than you will think because we are taught that safety comes first and the coaches show you how to tackle and be tackled safely. With the right, correctly taught technique, it is a safe game, with reduced injury. Joining rugby also helps with skills and values such as leadership, resilience, good sportsmanship and creating strong friendships. Rugby is like a big family because when you have joined a club you become part of something much bigger. We travel to games all over the Midlands every weekend and are warmly welcomed wherever we go. As we get older and get better we will start to play tour matches across the UK. I have been invited to play as a guest player for a team in Wales next season for a weekend and whatever I do in life and wherever I end up studying or working, rugby will be part of it and I will be part of the world rugby family. Chinese New Year a roaring success

On Tuesday 1st February we celebrated Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year. This year is the year of the tiger and the festival celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar and solar Chinese calendar. Students were treated to a feast at lunch time by Mr Palmer and his team which, as usual, was very popular indeed!

Please remember to regularly check your child's catering account and top up when necessary.
