John Cabot was an Italian sailor. He sailed the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to North America in 1497. He wanted to reach east Asia by sailing west, but America was in his way. His ship was called the Mathew. He explored the island of Newfoundland. The date and place of Cabots birth are unknown. Cabot set sail from Bristol in May 1497 on his boat. He took a crew of 20 men. On June 1497, Cabot sighted land in Atlantic Canada, his son, Sebastian claimed that it was Cape Breton. Cabots second time exploring Newfoundland was a disaster! All of his ships were lost!, but he reopened contact with North America and discovered rich fishing areas.
John Cabot was trying to reach the riches of Asia, while working for Vietnam, but America was in his route. He decided to explore Newfoundland.
