A review on Island on Bird Street by Uri Orlev
Protagonist-Alex (Main character)
Antagonist-Hitler (Main bad character, even though not talk about it book)
Flat-Boruch (Does not change throughout book)
Round-Alex's dad (Complex, will fight but not the main character)
Dynamic-Alex (Use to life before the war, had to start thinking differently)
Flitting (Chapter 4)- moving swiftly and lightly
Galitsiyaners (Chapter 5)- a subdivision of the Ashkenazim geographically originating from Galicia, from western Ukraine
Pogram(Chapter 6)- A pogrom is a violent riot aimed at the massacre or persecution of an ethnic or religious group
Beretta(Chapter 1)- a stiff square cap with three or four upright projecting pieces extending from the center of the top to the edge, worn by ecclesiastics
Zionism(Chapter 2)-protection of a Jewish nation
(Chapter 1) " 'It would be better' father said once, 'if it were simply erased from all the history books. As though he had never existed.' " This is an example of an hyperbole because that couldn't happen.
(Chapter 4) " I was born with a 'hat on' and anyone born with a 'hat on' was supposed to have good luck. What that really meant, mother said, was that some babies were born with part of the sac that enclosed them in the womb still over their heads." This is an example on an idiom. I know because it has a meaning but the "hat on" is not literal.
(Chapter 5) "Pan Gryn jumped up like a man with a snake in his pants and looked like he were going to brain me." This is an example of a simile because it compares him to a snake and a man who were "going to brain" while using the word like.
(Chapter 4)" I took my life in my hands" This is an example of a hyperbole because it is not literal.
This is a clip from the Island on Bird Street movie.
This clip relates to the selection chapter because in the clip, you see Alex running for a broken down building, which he does when the selection is taking place.
People are people
Many people have gone through prejudice and unfair treatment. For example, women were not allowed to vote until 1920, African Americans were not given fair treatment until the Brown vs. The Board of Education, and the Jews were treated like slaves, and killed, during the holocaust.
Delibrate acts of kindness
Many people during the holocaust risked their life to try and helped Jews. Some times it helped and sometimes it did not and they were caught. The people in hiding are helped by Otto Frank’s four employees: Miep Gies, Johannes Kleiman, Victor Kugler and Bep Voskuijl. Miep’s husband Jan Gies helps too; and Bep’s father Jan Voskuijl is also involved. Anne Frank once said "Never have they uttered a single word about the burden we must be, never have they complained that we were too much trouble. They come upstairs every day and talk to the men about business and politics, to the women about food and wartime difficulties and to the children about books and newspapers."
