New Journeys

At the end of the year Mrs Evans will be leaving Cedar Road Primary School. Her new role as EYFS lead will allow her to be closer to home and her wonderful family.

Mrs Evans has worked here for the last 16 years and so it will of course be sad to see her leave. When she first started at Cedar Road Primary she taught in Year 6 for many years until she was eventually persuaded to move to Early Years and she never looked back! Having worked with nearly all of the children in the school we can safely say she will be greatly missed!

I'm sure you will all join us in congratulating Mrs Evans on her new role and wishing her the best of luck.

We have received a fantastic review of our performance of Hamlet last term. Click on the picture below to have a closer look.

Earth Day

Every year, Earth Day happens on April 22nd. However it is not too late to celebrate this year!

Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity to teach our children more about protecting planet Earth. We can teach them about the 3Rs — recycling, reducing, and reusing — as well as how plants grow, among so many other fun activities. Let’s throw a big celebration with these fun Earth Day Activities.

1. Start a Seed Jar

This is a great experiment to show children what seeds typically do underground before they sprout from the earth.

  1. Fill the jar with paper towels. Children can fold them and push them down into the jar. This is also great work for little hands.
  2. Gently water your seed jar to wet the paper towels. DO NOT FLOOD IT!
  3. Carefully push seeds down into the paper towels around the edge of the jar so they can still be seen. Make sure they are firmly held in place.

2. Make a Bird Feeder

Want to encourage a love of bird watching? Encourage birds to visit your garden by making bird feeders! We love the idea of rolling pine cones in peanut butter and bird feed and then hanging up this tasty treat in our garden. (You can also use old plastic eggs to shape bird feed treats).

3. Visit National Parks Virtually

I'm sure many of us would love to visit a US National Park on Earth Day but distance may be a small issue! The good news is that without a long flight, we can still discover national parks as many are offering virtual visits!

Get a bird’s eye view of the Grand Canyon. Discover the fjords of Alaska. Or visit the active volcanoes of Hawaii. Just visit www.purewow.com/travel/us-national-park-virtual-tours for more information.

4. Organize a Neighborhood Safari

National Geographic has a fabulous idea: Learn about the world’s many animals through the Kids National Geographic Learning resources. Next up encourage your children to draw or colour pictures of animals and hang those pictures in your window.

Get your whole neighborhood in on this Earth Day hunt, by sharing the idea and choosing a week where you can all walk around your neighborhood and look for pictures of animals in people’s windows. Encourage your children to point them out and name the animals.

5. Make a Recycling Bin Creative Earth Day Craft

Open up the recycling bin to see what crafts we could make with things that we don’t need anymore just like this fantastic recycled robot craft!

What a fun Earth Day idea for children of all ages. Younger children may end up with monsters and less-defined ideas. Older kids can strategize what items to use and why.

Timetable Changes

As some of you may be aware we have recently made some changes to our timetable which affected reward time.

After listening to your views I have made the following decision.

The Friday celebration assembly will now take place virtually on a Friday afternoon which then allows time to be followed by reward time. This will be slightly shorter than last term, however, my original plan of increased creative/enrichment days will remain with the first being for the jubilee and further details will follow.

Dudley and Gabriella had all the Friday feelings today!

Cedar Road Reading Corner

Welcome back to The Cedar Road Reading Corner. This week we thought we would let you know about some brand new releases that we are looking forward to reading. Let us know if you give any of them a try!

For Key stage 1 we like the look of A Song of Gladness: A Story of Hope for Us and Our Planet by Michael Morpurgo.

With vibrant illustrations from Emily Gravett, Michael Morpurgo celebrates the diversity of the natural world with a tour of English gardens, African savannah and forest canopy and the wild and wonderful creatures that live there.

For Key Stage 2 we are really looking forward to getting stuck into Julia and the Shark by Kiran Millwood Hargrave.

Brimming with hope and gorgeously illustrated by Tom de Freston, Julia and the Shark is a mesmerising story of a family, a lighthouse and a quest to find the elusive Greenland shark from the award-winning author of The Girl of Ink & Stars.

Lastly for the adults we of course couldn't pass by Elizabeth Finch by Julian Barnes

Charting the story of a remarkable teacher through the recollections of a former student, this stunning novel from the Man Booker Prize-winning author of The Sense of an Ending is both a breathtaking testament to the power of human connection and a deeply-felt love letter to philosophy.

Abington Library (Community Managed) Visit your local library to borrow some wonderful books. It’s free!

Dyslexia Friendly Books

This week we placed an order for a large collection of dyslexia friendly books which will take pride of place in our school library. We hope that the children enjoy accessing these books which will do a fantastic job in improving their confidence in reading.
