Cougar Report october 2019

Principal's Update:

Be a cougar champion.

Showing kindness, helping one another, being accepting of everyone and recognizing that diversity is our strength was the message shared as we packed the gym for our kick-off assembly on the first day of school.

We are excited about our achievements and the learning that took place school-wide during the month of September and we look forward to carrying the momentum forward.

This year’s Terry Fox campaign was another huge success. I would like to thank our students and their families for their generous donations, and I would also like to acknowledge the leadership of those staff who helped organize this year’s initiative. Sure, we wore silly hats, Mrs. Cox dyed her hair purple (which is super awesome!) and we jumped into a kiddie pool full of ice water, but most importantly we raised over $2000 in support of the Terry Fox foundation and cancer research. Well done, cougars!

On Monday, September 30th we came together for another very important cause: Orange shirt day. Staff and students were encouraged to wear orange for the purpose of raising awareness about residential schools in Canada. As we begin to engage in the process of reconciliation as a school, board, and as Canadians, we will continue to acknowledge the presence and contributions of both past and present Indigenous peoples with whom we share this land today.

In an effort to provide the best possible learning experience for your child and to meet their academic and social-emotional learning needs, I believe that it is critically important that we reflect on our perspective and experiences, and engage in this process together. We want all children to feel safe, belong and see themselves as valuable members of our school.

If we haven’t had the chance already, I look forward to connecting with you. Your voice and participation matters and will positively contribute to student success. I take great pride in having these conversations, as our partnership will shape our understanding and ultimately strengthen the open-door flow of school and community. We are a community.

There are many ways to get involved at Chalmers and be engaged in your child’s learning. We welcome your volunteerism in our classrooms, on excursions, with our Strong Start Reading program, helping during special events and activities (e.g., pizza days, fall fair), and we encourage your voice at School Council.

Let’s unite our passion, skills and energy to make this a memorable and exciting year!

School Council Update: Fall Fair & Chocolates

School Council has been busy getting the year started. Our first big event of the year is coming! A Fall Fair to bring our community out and connect with one another over fun, laughter and maybe a little bit of shopping!

We are so excited to see all of your faces there on Friday, October 18th between 4:30-7pm. Connect with us on Facebook (@chalmersparentgroup), Instagram (@chalmersparentgroup) and Twitter (@groupchalmers) to stay informed on this, and future happenings at our school!

Also, stay tuned for our first (and biggest) fundraiser of the year... Aunt Sarah’s chocolates which were a HUGE hit last year! They will be coming home on Friday October 11th, just in time for Thanksgiving!

Our next School Council meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 9th at 6:30pm in the library. We hope to see you there!
