NEW Year, SAME YOU.

Toward the end of the year, we frequently hear of people who set New Year’s resolutions designed to SOLVE or CHANGE things in the current year, so they become NEW in the next year. Developing New Year’s resolutions should not be viewed as a negative effort; however, the way we develop them often discounts, dismisses, and denies the entire current year. When New Year’s resolutions are developed in this way, we often set unrealistic goals and set ourselves up for a disappointing New Year from the very beginning.

The reality is that we are who we are from the end of year closing to the New Year beginning. The reality is that we may not have CHANGED, and many things may remain UNRESOLVED. When we discount the current year, we fail to acknowledge the progress one has already made within the current year. When we dismiss the current year, we fail to acknowledge the purpose of the current year. When we deny the current year, we forget all the good decisions we made, and fail to acknowledge what we want to KEEP doing in the New Year.

When developing New Year’s resolutions, it is important that we end the current year in ACCEPTANCE and begin the New Year with ACCEPTANCE. Take time to self-reflect on 2022 within your family, career, friends, physical/mental health, and habits/hobbies. Celebrate yourself by reflecting on the wisest decisions that you made, the lessons that you learned, the things you completed, and the risks you took. Ask yourself, what are you most proud of? What was the best thing you discovered about yourself? What are you most grateful for? What were your greatest, most memorable, and most joyful moments in 2022?
