Sustainable Futures Seminar Series 20 October 2022

At this event, The University of Manchester's Ms Zoé Schyns and Dr Raphael Tarpani joined the Sustainable Futures Seminar Series to discuss recycled plastic content determination and assessing environmental impacts and circularity of digital services for health and wellbeing. The event brought in over 70 internal and external attendees.

Dr Alejandro Gallego Schmid, Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Circular Economy and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment and Resourceful Futures Challenge Lead for Sustainable Futures, was the chair of the event.

Ms Zoé Schyns, PhD Researcher in the Department of Materials, spoke first on "Recycled Plastic Content Determination Through Aggregation – Induced Emission".

Ms Schyns explained that her research provides a novel way to mark the recycled content in plastics to promote recycling and reduce land-filling rates. She then gave a brief overview of the global plastic pollution problem and an introduction to the UK’s plastic packaging tax. She then went into more detail on the research and the technique of using fluorescent tags to mark recycled content in plastics and it's industrial applicability.

MS Schyns ended her segment by participating in a live Q&A session with the attendees.

Dr Raphael Tarpani, Research Associate in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace & Civil Engineering, spoke next on "Assessing the environmental impacts and circularity of digital services for health and wellbeing".

Dr Tarpani's talk covered what digitalization and digital services are and what their role is for sustainable development. He then reflected on how to assess the environmental impacts and circularity of digital services, using a case study of independent elderly living schemes in the UK.

At the end of his presentation, Dr Tarpani answered some questions from the attendees.

Our chair, Dr Alejandro Gallego Schmid thanked the attendees and our guest speakers and closed the event.
