The True Rest How important is to have a separated day of rest?

Is it necessary to have a day of rest each week?

What day should be chosen? Does this have something to do with the physical restoration or does it have any spiritual significance?

The weekly day of rest has its origins in a sinless world. It is a special God given gift that enables humans to experience here on earth the reality of heaven.

1. What are the three acts of God in establishing the Sabbath? (Genesis 2:1-3)

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

2. What is the fourth commandment in God’s law? (Exodus 20:8-11)

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. You shall labor six days, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates; for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy.

3. According to the New Testament, what was the special day that our Lord Jesus went to church? (Luke 4:16)

He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.

4. After His death, what commandment was observed in a special way by the followers of Christ? (Luke 23:54-56)

It was the day of the Preparation, and the Sabbath was drawing near. The women, who had come with him out of Galilee, followed after, and saw the tomb, and how his body was laid. They returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

On his evangelistic trips, the apostle Paul attended the synagogues on the Sabbath and preached of Christ (Acts 13:14; 17:1, 2; 18:4), not only to the Jews, but to the Gentiles also. (Acts 13:42, 44).

5. Where there wasn’t a synagogue, on what day did the apostle look for an adequate place to worship? (Acts 16:13)

On the Sabbath day we went forth outside of the city by a riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down, and spoke to the women who had come together.

6. What special day will be observed by the redeemed for worship in the New Earth? (Isaiah 66:22, 23)

For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me,” says Yahweh, “so your seed and your name shall remain. It shall happen, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me,” says Yahweh.

The Sabbath will be kept by those who want to be a part of God’s people embracing His covenant. This day is a sign of liberation from sin and an entering into the true rest of God, which separates the redeemed from the rest of the world. Do you want to follow the example of the Lord of the Sabbath?
