Your adherence to all the applicable NCAA rules and regulations is essential as we strive to maintain and enhance all academic and athletic endeavors while protecting the University's values and integrity.
Definitions:
Prospective Student-Athlete (PSA): Any individual who has started class for the 9th grade (7th grade for men's basketball, softball, and women's volleyball), including students at prep schools, junior colleges, and individuals who have officially withdrawn from four-year institutions.
Student-Athlete: A student who participates in the intercollegiate athletics program.
Recruiting: Any solicitation of a prospect by an institution's athletic staff to encourage him/her to enroll at that institution and participate in its intercollegiate athletic programs.
Extra Benefit: Any special arrangement by an institutional employee or booster to provide a student-athlete, his/her friends or family, a benefit not authorized by the NCAA.
DOs - Regarding involvement with current student-athletes:
You may...
- Contact a current student-athlete regarding employment opportunities; however, no contact may be made without approval from the NCAA compliance.
- Provide a student-athlete (but not his/her family or friends) an occasional meal at your home (not in a restaurant); however, not without approval from the office of NCAA Compliance.
DON'TS - Regarding involvement with current student-athletes:
You may NOT...
- Provide a current student-athlete (friends and family) any benefit or special arrangement without approval from the Office of NCAA Compliance.
- Pay or arrange payment of the room, board, or any type of transportation for a student-athlete or his/her family.
- Entertain a student-athlete or friends/family.
- Provide gifts or awards.
- Provide telephone calls or reduced-cost lodging in your home to a student-athlete.
DOs - Regarding involvement with prospective student-athletes:
You may...
- Forward information about the prospective student-athletes to the appropriate staff.
- Have telephone contact with a prospect regarding permissible pre-enrollment activities, such as summer employment, provided the prospect has graduated from high school and signed a National Letter of Intent.
- Have a telephone conversation with a prospect if the prospect initiates the call. An institutional staff member may not prearrange such a call and you are not permitted to have a recruiting conversation, but may exhibit normal civility.
- Continue established family relationships with friends and neighbors. Contacts with sons and daughters of these families are permitted so long as they are not made for recruiting purposes or encouraged by Binghamton University coaches.
- View a prospect's athletics contest at your own initiative provided you do not contact the prospect or his/her parents. In addition, you may not contact a prospect's coach, principal, or counselor in an attempt to evaluate the prospect.
DON'TS - Regarding involvement with prospective student-athletes:
You may NOT...
- Write, email, or telephone a prospective student-athlete or his/her parents in an effort to recruit the prospect to Binghamton University.
- Become involved in making arrangements to provide money, financial aid or a benefit of any kind to a prospect or the prospect's family/friends.
- Make contact with a prospective student-athlete and his/her parents when the prospect is on campus for an official or unofficial recruiting visit.
- Transport, pay for, or arrange for payment of transportation costs for a prospect and his/her family or friends to visit campus or elsewhere.
- Provide ANYTHING to a prospect, the prospect's family, or friends without prior approval from the Office of NCAA Compliance.
- Have any contact with a student who is enrolled at another institution about his/her interest in transferring to Binghamton University.
Name, Image, and Likeness
Student-athletes can now profit off of their name, image, and likeness (NIL).
Examples of how intercollegiate athletes could use their NIL (not an exhaustive list):
- Promote their own business;
- Promote a corporate entity (e.g., brand ambassador, social media influencer);
- Establish their own camp/clinic;
- Make an appearance at any location and receive compensation;
- Sign autographs and receive compensation.
Compensation may NOT be provided in exchange for athletic performance or attendance at Binghamton University (ex. points/goal, games played). Student-athletes must be paid the going rate and submit the Name, Image and Likeness Disclosure.
Pay for play and recruiting inducements are still prohibited under NCAA bylaws.
