Summer Term Highlights 2023

Welcome to the 2023 Summer Term edition of St Hugh's Highlights, giving you an overview of this term's activities!

We are delighted to have been shortlisted in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2023.

We have been shortlisted in the category of Independent School of the Year for Student Wellbeing.

Trips and Visits

Nursery enjoyed a day at Tattershall Farm Park.

Reception had a wonderful time at Stourton Estates as part of their Minibeasts topic.

To complete the topic, the class welcomed their parents and Nursery children to join them for an Ugly Bug Ball. They danced and sang and had a feast!

The whole of the Early Years Department enjoyed a sunny day at the beach.

Year 1 visited Heckington Windmill to learn about the process of flour making. They were incredibly brave as they climbed the ladders to enjoy the view from the balcony.

The flour workshop was the favourite part of the day... we think Mr Fisher might still be finding flour on the bus!

The class ended their topic on Traditional Fairy Tales with a fabulous fancy dress day. They baked and decorated gingerbread men, cracked the code on a fairy tale hunt, and chased away a giant (who thankfully dropped off a box of ice-cream sundae treats as he tried to escape!).

Year 2 visited Lincolnshire Wildlife Park to find out more about endangered animals.

Joseph thought Nigel the three-legged puma was "about to eat me"... but thankfully everyone made it back to school in one piece!

They completed their topic work with a dress up day, full of activities - before welcoming their parents to join them for the afternoon.

Year 4 soared high enjoying a day on the high ropes at Wild Pines.

Mr Goodhand was very impressed with how everyone worked as part of a team – encouraging and challenging their team mates to go beyond their comfort zone.

Year 5 ventured to France and had an 'incroyable' week.

Back on Lincolnshire's soil, Year 5 also travelled to Mr Scott's farm as part of their topic on farming.

Year 6 explored Castle Rising in Norfolk.

They also enjoyed a day at Wild Pines.

Those who met their Accelerated Reader targets were rewarded with milkshakes, hot chocolates and ice-creams!

Art Scholars in Years 6 & 7, along with Year 8 pupils, were transported into Van Gogh's world when they travelled to an exhibition in Leicester.

Year 8 pupils turned into detectives and investigated a crime scene as part of a Forensic Science day at the University of Lincoln.

Forest School

As part of our commitment to National Tree Week, we planted saplings around the edge of the school field.

We assembled and decorated bird boxes to encourage visitors to our gardens.

Years 3 & 4 were challenged to light a fire using only flint, steel and cotton wool. Great work - you were both Challenging Cheetahs and Persevering Parrots!

We had a fabulous time pond dipping and found lots of small newts, pond skaters and other minibeasts.

We suitably marked The King's Coronation by making our own crowns and re-enacting the event in our own special way!

Year 5 found a newly dug badgers' sett so they got to work redirecting the boundary to ensure we didn't encroach their area!

We celebrated World Bee Day.

We played a team game where everyone had to collect nectar using a pipette but, just like bees, they couldn't communicate to the other worker bees to tell them where the nectar was. Instead, they had to use 'bee communication' and do a waggle dance!

Everyone was a busy bee running around collecting their nectar and filling their hives (ice cube trays).

Mr Goodhand brought in his beekeeping equipment to show Pre Prep.

On a hot and sunny day we made our Father's Day Medals in the welcome shade of the trees.

The children created some fantastic medals!

Everyone used their skills of observation and teamwork as they embarked on a nature scavenger hunt.

They managed to find everything on the list except 'dew' as the warm weather we have had made that slightly impossible!

Not forgetting simply having time to be free, explore and enjoy time with friends!

Music & Drama

Our Speech and Drama Festival saw everyone performing a poem or prose of their choice to not only their classmates but also their families - and guest judges!

Well done to everyone!

Year 5 pupils enjoyed a day at Oakham participating in a Carnival Dance day.

Our musicians were a HUGE hit when they performed at the Lincolnshire Show.

Our Summer Gala Concert saw our musicians take to the stage.

Singers had a fabulous time attending 'Singsation' at the Theatre Royal in Lincoln.

The event was presented by Hayley Sanderson, who is one of the lead vocalists from Strictly Come Dancing and hosted by Lincolnshire Music Service.

The Junior Play, The Rocky Monster Show, was a Rock 'n' Roll musical with a mix of the Addams Family, Young Frankenstein and Phantom of the Opera, with Rebecca and The Rocky Horror Show thrown in for good measure!

The cast, crew and production team all deserved their huge round of applause!

Sport

In Athletics, we saw fabulous performances at the East Area Athletics Competition, the NPSA Athletics Championships and the National Prep Schools’ Athletics Finals in Nuneaton.

Florence L earned a silver medal in the long jump at the National Prep Schools’ Athletics Finals.

We've enjoyed some superb cricket weather with a busy programme of fixtures for all.

We reached the final of the Lincolnshire County Cup Cricket Competition at U13 level and the semis for the U12s. Our girls were runners up at the ECB Indoor Cricket Competition.

Our golfers have enjoyed success on the green and our weekly golf hobby at Woodhall Spa Golf Club is proving ever popular.

Well done to all the golfers who competed in St Hugh's Golf Cup Challenge this year and congratulations to:

🥇Megan (Gross 44), 🥈Ellis (Gross 50), 🥉Rory S & Sebastian (Gross 52).

Children from Years 3 and 4 had the amazing opportunity to travel to Twickenham Stadium for the Gallagher Premiership Final.

They even played on the hallowed turf in a curtain raiser for the final between Saracens and Sale Sharks!

Our U11 Swim Team put on a great show at Ponds Forge for the ESSA National Finals after training hard with additional sessions at school and in the longer pool at Jubilee Park.

Charlotte T did herself proud when she competed at the IAPS National Finals, held at the London Aquatics Centre.

While our younger swimmers enjoyed showing off their skills to family at the Fun Swimming Gala...

... and our EYFS children welcomed parents to see them in their lessons.

Sports Day was a fabulous day enjoyed by all.

Well done to everyone for outstanding individual performances and sportsmanship.

It is always great to see a number of records being challenged. Congratulations to India B-W for breaking the intermediate girls' Javelin record (held since 2017) , and Florence L for breaking both the 800m (1993) and Long Jump (2012) record.

Winners of the Victrix and Victor Ludorum trophies were Florence L and Rico L.

...Tie-Dye and Craft Nights...

We have enjoyed lots of nice summer evenings.

Venturing into the village to visit the Kinema...

Enjoying a swim in the outdoor pool...

... and trips to the park.

We look forward to welcoming new pupils to the Boarding House next term!

Goodbyes and Good Lucks!

To all those leaving the St Hugh's family - you will be missed!

Our youngest pupils graduated...

Our Year 6 pupils enjoyed a BBQ and party together.

For those leaving us, Good Luck in your new schools!

To our Year 8 Leavers, we hope you have enjoyed your last few weeks with us and are excited for the future.

We hope all our pupils stay in touch and come back and see us...

...just like the class of 1983 did this year!

Farewell and best wishes to Teaching Assistants...

Mrs Sim who leaves us as Thomas is moving on to his next school, and Mr Nicholl.

Thank you - you have been a huge part of all aspects of school life!

And thank you to our Resident Assistants, Miss Williams and Mr Morrison, who have supported Boarding and Sport this year.

For Mrs Appleton, after many years of incredible support and dedication to St Hugh's as teacher and parent, she will be taking well-deserved retirement...

...but has already offered her services as a volunteer!

Speech Day

We finished the summer term, once again, celebrating the wonderful achievements of our incredible pupils.

Thank you to Wing Commander Sonny Roe, member of the Atlantic Flyers, for his inspirational speech about his magnificent feat of rowing across the Atlantic.

To all our families and friends, enjoy your summer!
