Project Description:

The Wellness, Education, Leisure, and Lifestyle (WELL) expansion project is a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the building that opened on the Sacramento State campus in 2010. It functions as a fitness and recreation center and a health and wellness center. Though the two uses are separate and occupy different building areas, they tie together with an overarching theme and purpose of health, mind and body. A welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff and alumni, it attracts the greater community to educational, cultural and social experiences at Sacramento State.

Informed by its context, the expansion’s design retains the original building’s iconic look—seamlessly blending the character of the two as if it were a singular project and creating a space to fulfill its mission of lifetime wellness through collaboration, education and innovation. New and updated amenities include multiple all-gender showers, restrooms and dressing rooms; expanded locker room capacity; additional strength and free-weight fitness space; additional group fitness studios and a dedicated group cycling studio; additional lounge space; additional health and wellness education rooms; an expanded healthy cooking demonstration kitchen; group counseling rooms and offices; an expanded athletic training facility; and an expanded and renovated urgent-care facility.

Student Health and Counseling Services added urgent care counseling spaces, the confidential advocate’s office, new exam rooms and an athletic training facility that supports all students, including participants in campus clubs and recreational sports.
