A Labor of Love The transformation of our farmhouse

In December 2015 we decided to make a big life change and look for a property in the country. I'll always remember turning into the driveway of the home that would become ours and knowing we were home. Don't get me wrong, there was nothing particularly amazing about the house that communicated this. But after my husband and I looked at it for quite a while that day, I think we had a hunch of what it could become. The 10 acres and the shop sealed the deal and we knew we could work with the house. So work we did, and then some!

The three main projects that cemented the character of the house have been the kitchen, living room, and primary bathroom.

One of the first major remodels we did was the kitchen. The choice of it being first wasn't exactly left to us as a broken pipe hastened the remodel plans! Being six months without a kitchen made us all the more grateful when it was done and we were no longer washing dishes in the bathroom sink. The transformation from a 90's oak filled kitchen to a light and bright modern farmhouse space was amazing.

I chose white shaker cabinets that I felt would be timeless. I asked our cabinet makers to create a kitchen island that resembled a furniture piece to bring in another tone and some character to the space. The grey veined quartz and grey subway tile tied everything in.

One of the reasons we fell in love with the house is that it has amazing windows that bring in lots of natural light and feature the forested area around the house. The lodge style sloped living room gives the space some character but also left us wondering how to fill it. Besides for bringing in an incredibly large Christmas tree each year, I was a bit stumped on what to do with the living room. After a mishap of scraping the top of a tree on the ceiling, my husband was no longer keen on me bringing the outside inside (oops). We had created a fireplace wall at one of our vacation rentals and we decided that it would be a great addition to this house as well! The shiplap worked perfectly with the style I was going for. I figured that even after shiplap isn't trendy anymore, our house will still be a farmhouse! We redid the casing around each window as well, framing them in larger white frames that showcased the view. The new wood floors were continued from the kitchen remodel. I also had fun styling the new shelves in vintage finds and family photos.

The last major remodel was of our primary bathroom. We held on for six long years before this one happened! The existing space was extremely small for a bathroom with the majority of the space being wasted with a walk-in closet that wasn't very functional. I really had to push my creative limits with this space! I wanted to add a bathtub, a window, and it had to have closet space. I planned everything out in a 3D rendering and crossed my fingers for no surprises once we tore into the walls!

I couldn't have been happier with how the design came together and how everything worked out almost exactly to the 3D rendering I had created. The white tile with black fixtures tied in to the rest of the house and the heated hexagon tile floors were a luxury we never knew we needed. Built in wardrobes solved our closet problem and made room for the sought after bathtub.

Now after 7 years in the house, there's not a lot of surfaces, inside and out, that haven't been touched. Always feeling like you're living in construction has been hard at times but as we look at the transformation and remember how much love we've poured into it to get to where we are (mostly) done, it feels like it was worth it.
