Born may 22, 1783, William sturgeon was raised in the town of whittington, Lancashire England, then died on December 4th 1850 in prestwich Lancashire.

sturgeon made the first electromagnet capable of supporting more than its own weight. this lead to the telegraph, the electric motor, and numerous other devices basic to modern technology.

sturgeon didn't do to college and he didn't get a degree. sturgeon was self taught in mathematics and physics. he spent most of his time lecturing and conducting electrical experiments. In 1824, he became a lecturer at the toyal military college.

sturgeon entered the military in 1805. after his mother died, his father became a harsh man and sent him away to be a shoemakers apprentice in 1783.
