1) CHÁVEZ STUDENT CENTER
  • Built in 1960
  • Namend in honor of the founding president of the farm worker's union (César Estrada Chávez)
  • Services: Student advising, Center for transfer, Re-entry and Student Parents, The Golden Bear, resources and services, student arts organisation

2) SATHER GATE
  • Prominent Landmark
  • Popular spot for leafleting and politicking
  • Built 1909
  • Named after the pionieer California banker Peder Sather
  • Seperates Sproul Plaza from the bridge over Strawberry Creek, leading to the center of the UC Berkeley
3) CAMPANILE
  • Completed in 1914
  • 307 feet tall
  • Includes observation plattform and sixty-one bell carillon
  • Carillon concerts take place at 7:50 a.m., noon and 6:00 p.m.
4) DINOSAUR - VALLEY LIFE SCIENCES BUILDING
  • A freestanding mount of Tyrannosaurus rex at the centerpiece of the atrium
  • Above the T. rex is a Pteranodon ingens soaring with a wingspan close to 22 feet
5) DWINELLE HALL - KNOWN AS A MAZE
  • Built in 1952
  • One of the largest buildings on campus
  • Seems as a maze due to the fact, that there is a massed up floor plan and messed up numbering system
  • Reason for that: Dwinelle was supposed to be two seperate buildings
  • Classics, Rhetoric, Linguistics, History, Film Studies, French, German, etc.
6) WHEELER HALL
  • Built in 1917
  • Named for Benjamin Ide Wheeler, university president from 1899-1919
  • It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982
  • English, College Writing Program, Summer Sessions
7) CROSSROADS
  • Green-certified building at UC Berkeley
  • Nation’s first organic certified kitchen on a college campus Crossroads
  • Dining options: breakfast, lunch and dinner every weekday/ brunch and dinner on the weekends/ a popular late night grill and study lounge Sunday to Thursday
  • Adress: 2415 Bowditch St, Berkeley, CA 94704
8) THE WHISPERING BENCH
  • Also known as the Jubilee Bench
  • Donated by the class of 1897 and was placed in 1922
  • Located just down the steps from the Campanile
  • The name was given due to the fact that you can sit across from each other on the bench and clearly hear each other's voices without having to speak louder than a whisper
9) ADMISSIONS - SPROUL
  • Designed in the early 1940s
  • First stop of students embarking on their academic career at Cal
  • It hosts admissions, financial aid, registar and the campus visitor services
  • Steps in front of the building are called Savio Steps, in honor of Mario Savio, who gave a famous speech in 1964
10) HAAS BUSINESS SCHOOL
  • Built in 1995
  • Designed by Charles Moore
  • Mini-Campus of three connected buildings
  • The $55 million project was financed by private donations
  • In 1989 the UC Berkeley Regents voted to rename the Business School in honor of Walter A. Haas, after a large gift from the Haas family
11) GREEK THEATER
  • In the hills above campus
  • Donated through funds by William R. Hearst
  • Designed by campus architect John Galem Howard
  • 7200-seat open air theater
  • Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982
12) NORTH GATE
  • A gift of the Class of 1954
  • Facing north towards Hearst Avenue
13) MINING CIRCLE
  • Built in 1914
  • Directly south of Hearst Memorial Mining Building
  • Surrounded by green and featuring a beautiful circular reflecting pool at its centre
14) BOALT HALL - COLLEGE OF LAW
  • Built in 1966
  • Originally the name of Durant Hall, which housed the Law School before
  • E. Boalt gave $100.000 in memory of her husband, judge John Henry Boalt
15) FOOTBALL
  • The California football team is called the California Golden Bears
  • Team began to play in 1885
  • The California Memorial Stadium is an outdoor football stadium on the campus
  • It seats around 63.000 footballfans
  • Was funded from public contributions as a memorial to Californians who lost their lives in World War I.
16) FREE SPEECH - MOFFITT
  • Free Speech Movement (FSM) Cafe
  • Located at the entrance to Moffitt Library
  • Place to gather, study or for enducational events
  • In honor of Mario Savio, who played a key role in the struggle for free speech at UC
17) EXPENSIVE FENCE - CHANCELLORS HOUSE
  • The Chancellor Nicolas Dirks and his family live on campus
  • They have been unnerved by a series of security breaches leading to the built of a fence
  • The costs were raising up to $ 700.000, more than 2 1/2 times the original projection
  • This disgusts many people
