Competion Show and Principle/Secondary Marchers Definition

The UIL (University Interscholastic League) is the governing organization that creates rules and administers almost all athletic, musical and academic contests for public schools in the state of Texas. According to their rules, marching bands in the state of Texas cannot start learning any of the marching portion of their competition show before August 1st.

Tommorow we will begin learning our 2022 competition show and we are so excited! This has been in the making stages since January and we are ready to watch this show become a reality.

All students will be issued either a primary or secondary marching spot to begin the process. Each of these assignments and pairings are decided upon by the staff and directors based on initial marching assessments made throughout summer band. These assignments are based on over-all marching technique of each individual student, numbers of available marching spots in each section and the overall needs of the group.

THIS IS ONLY A STARTING POINT. Read that last statement one more time. Here it is one more time... THIS IS ONLY A STARTING POINT.

All students earning a secondary position will have MANY opportunities throughout the season to earn a primary position or specific duty to ensure the success of the show. No matter the amount of planning that goes into creating an award winning marching band show, there will be changes as the show begins to come to light. There will be additions to the show, sickness/injuries, eligibility issues, and other changes that will occur throughout the season that must be addressed to avoid any "holes" in the visuals.

Paired students will have equal opportunity to learn the assigned "marching spot" through rotations during rehearsal. An example would include if we run through each section twice, the primary marcher would have a turn and then the secondary marcher would have a turn. We do our very best to allow equality in reps as we can reasonably provide. It is up to both the primary and secondary marchers to take advantage of each of those opportunities.

Each week the directors and staff will be evaluating each primary/secondary student using this rubric. At the conclusion of each weekly assessment the directors will discuss the results with each evaluated student. This assessment will take place through observations throughout the week and designate who is the primary marcher for either the next public performance and/or next week rehearsals.

The designation of primary and secondary marchers only apply to the competition show and no other part of the marching band. Either designation can be changed at any time throughout the season based on, but not limited to, performance, attendance, attitude, and eligibility .

Every student will have an important function to the marching show. There are many functions that must occur in order for a large marching band to be successful and ALL participating students will have a meaningful experience.

Now... Let's get started!!!!!!!
