Beehive
In the Beehive the Bumblebees have been learning the text ‘Shark in the Park’. They have made telescopes to look for the sea creature, we have had a shark post box to count fish into and they have created their own collage shark.
They have also been very creative over the Halloween period, making marks with pumpkins and for Bonfire Night they made fireworks pictures with a salad spinner.
The children have really engaged with ‘World Nursery Rhyme week' learning five rhymes.
Well done, Bumblebees!
F1
Over the last few weeks F1 have had some wonderful opportunities. We have a new story in TFW ‘Take a Walk Little Bear’. One of the characters is a bee and the children have loved researching information about bees and even got to try some delicious honey! Yummy!!
For our topic on homes, we introduced the children to google earth and looked at locations that are important to us. We zoomed down onto the school. They thought this was fascinating. Some children even went home and completed some research of their own. Well done!!
Some of the teachers went on some training by a man called Greg Botterill. It focused on mark making and symbols. As part of our implementation, we sent home secret messages in a book for you to read with your child. Thank you for posting you and your child finding the secret messages. The children loved this and liked talking about getting a message from their teacher.
We have had a lovely few weeks and are looking forward to a fresh new year with a few new additions coming to us from the Beehive.
Thank you again for your support.
F2
In Foundation 2 we have been having a wonderful time. We have been learning about Remembrance and created some beautiful poppy paintings by printing. We also enjoyed learning about different homes in our geography work and created charts to show whether we live in detached, semi-detached or terraced houses, or bungalows, cottages, or flats.
Recently we have been scientists and have been learning about space, our planet and beyond. We used marbling ink to create our own beautiful planets. Our Talk for Writing Story is 'Baby Bear Goes to the Moon', so we have had lots of our own adventures to the moon and have even been writing shopping lists with picnic foods to enjoy on the moon, just like Baby Bear.
In maths we have been exploring measures and comparing length, height, weight and capacity. Parents and carers, please help your child with this at home during everyday activities, such as talking about whose bag is heaviest and whose is lightest, which Christmas decoration is highest and which is lowest, which Christmas tree is the tallest and which one is shortest, etc.
We continue to enjoy our forest schools' sessions and recently worked as teams to build shelters. Snack time is always a highlight of the forest school sessions!
We are starting to work on Christmas songs, you may hear these being sung at home too! We would love it if parents or carers could join us for our Christmas craft session on Wednesday 14th December from 9-10am. We are also inviting parents and carers to our 'F2 Nativity Premiere' at 2:30pm on Thursday 15th December. We hope you can join us, and make sure you bring your singing voice!
Year 1
Year 1 are very excited about our learning at the moment. We are enjoying learning our latest T4W story – ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. Ask your child to retell it for you.
In science, we have begun our work on Astronomy! We are enjoying finding out about our solar system, especially the planets.
Our work in geography has continued to look at our local area. We have looked at and created our own map.
In RE, we have been looking at the Christmas story and the birth of Jesus. This is helping us to get ready for our forthcoming Christmas play – The First Christmas, which we are very excited to be performing to a live audience this year. Here is a reminder of the details and we look forward to seeing you there! Tickets may be purchased on ParentPay. There is a limit of 2 tickets per performance per family (4 tickets per family over both dates).
Tuesday 6th December 2022 – 10:30am
Wednesday 7th December 2022 – 2:30pm
Year 2
We have enjoyed writing reports on mythical creatures in T4W. We have talked about the firey, flaming Phoenix; the magical, glittery Pegasus and the three-headed, scaly Hydra. The children have really enjoyed creating imaginative pieces of writing.
This term in geography we have been exploring the seven continents of the world, with a special focus on North and South America. So far we have discovered and can name some of the countries within those two continents. This week we have researched a river within each of them.
Our Year 2s have been really intrigued to learn about the story of Grace O'Malley in history this half term. We have had debates about life at sea, re-created scenarios within her life and can confidently retell her story.
In science we have looked at living things, we went on a hunt around the school grounds categorising objects into living, once lived and never lived. Last week, we imagined being on a deserted island and discussed things we would need to survive and what things we need to just be happy.
We are looking forward to decorating our classrooms ahead of our Winter Wonderland evening and getting in the Christmas spirit!
Looking forward to seeing you next week at our Winter Wonderland!
Our next meeting is due to take place on Monday 5th December at 3:45 pm in school. Everyone welcome - it would be fantastic to see some new faces! Please come and find out all about what your PTFA is trying to do for your children and how much more we can do with extra pairs of hands and your ideas.
Year 3
Year 3 have had a tremendous start to this half term and it is clear they are enjoying their learning.
In our writing sessions, we have looked at writing a recount and how writing from first person is different to writing a regular story. The children have experimented with tense and diary writing formats to produce a diary entry as if they were writing it as a mad scientist (which came very naturally to some children!) Our text for our reading lessons has been 'The Iron Man' and we focussed on the way the Iron Man is first described to the reader. The children used inference to work out what was really being said and made predictions about whether the Iron Man was a force for good or something more sinister.
In maths we have finished our multiplication and division topic and moved onto fractions. The children demonstrated, through both visual and written methods, how to divide up amounts into equal groups. We then took that knowledge and applied it to fractions and the children showed their ability to find fractions of not only shapes, but quantities as well.
Our CKC afternoon sessions have seen us travel back in time, become computer game designers, create sculptures, play the violin and greet each other in Spanish.
In history we have looked at the Shang Dynasty of ancient China - we enjoyed looking at artefacts from that era and had a go at writing an Oracle Bone to the gods using Ancient Chinese language.
In music we have continued our sessions on the violin with Mr Wright and are now capable of playing by plucking and using a bow! We look forward to performing in our upcoming violin concert at the end of half term.
In art we created sculptures in the style of Barbara Hepworth. These were abstract statues that we made from mod-rock and some fantastic examples of expression were shown.
In computing we have looked at programming and how to code in instructions to Scratch. This allows us to set algorithms which makes our character move around the screen.
Finally, we have been conversing in Spanish; the children have learned how to greet depending on the time of day, how to ask somebody how they feel and how to respond appropriately. ¡Bien hecho Year 3!
Once again, we would like to thank the parents and carers for their continued support and for all the work they put in to making the children we teach so amazing! We look forward to seeing you at our school events!
Year 4
Year 4 have thoroughly enjoyed their singing sessions with Mr Keith and we are very proud of their progression, many of whom have successfully auditioned to get into our school choir. Both the choir and Year 4 children are very excited for our upcoming Hull Minster visits and cannot wait to showcase our talents.
We are incredibly proud of Year 4's achievements in the England Rocks battle where 4LM placed first out of all the classes in KS2. We are very much looking forward to the TT Rockstars DRET Battle in December. Keep logging on regularly at home, we can see the hard work is really paying off!
Our CKC subjects have been a huge success; we have been especially impressed with the technical aspects of our science lessons, where we have investigated a variety of simple machines.
In the run up to Christmas, we have lots of lovely things planned, including preparing for the Winter Wonderland evening, where we look forward to catching up with you all!
The Launch Pad
It has been a really busy November in The Launch Pad. The children returned to find a Witches' Lair in the role play area! It has been lovely to see them enjoying imaginary play and make new friends. Imaginary play is such an important part of nurture as it helps children develop language and communication skills and supports social and emotional development.
As usual, the children have been expressing themselves with their wonderful art. They created poppies for remembrance and worked hard to create a new display to celebrate the annual Anti-bullying Week. The children decorated odd socks to express themselves and show what makes them unique and had lots of fun discussion.
Year 5
Year 5 have had an action-packed start to the Autumn 2 term. In T4W, we have started our work on the discursive text, 'Should animals be kept in captivity?' and in T4R we are reading the poem, 'The Day The War Came'. In maths, we have completed our multiplication and division unit and have started our work on fractions.
We have completed our History unit about the Mayans, learning about the social class system, temples, gods and goddesses, the number system and using hieroglyphics in writing. Here are some of the hieroglyphics:
In geography, our new unit is all about Fairtrade. We are looking at what Fairtrade is, how chocolate is made and how a price of an item is shared between the farmer, retailer and the wholesaler. In science, our new unit is Rocks and Soils where we have learnt about the different types of rocks, what fossils are and the effects of erosion and weathering on rocks. Finally, in RE we have studied the festival of Diwali and made our own Rangoli patterns using chalk on the school playground.
Year 6
Year 6 have had another exciting couple of weeks at Wold as they undertook their Bikeability training sessions. Even though the children had to battle the rain, the pupils who took part were exceptional. The visitors, who run the Bikeability training, commented upon their maturity, resilience and biking ability - well done!
Please note that the children who did not take part due to the poor weather will complete their sessions on 5th December (please see class Dojo for further details).
In geography, Year 6 have been continuing their learning about Brazil. They are looking forward to creating a year group model of the favelas - look out for a photograph which will be shared on class Dojo at the end of the week.
The children thoroughly enjoyed their Talk 4 Reading text, 'Wonder'. They empathised with the main character Auggie and are aiming to put into practice the theme of the text: choose kind! We are looking forward to engaging in our new text, 'No Ballet Shoes in Syria'.
We continue to be impressed with the attitudes and work-ethic shown by our Year 6 pupils. We would like to thank you for your continued support with encouraging your child to read three times a week and completing their weekly homework.
Safeguarding update
At Wold, we recognise that keeping your child safe online in an ever-changing landscape is really difficult! With this in mind, we have subscribed to an online safety newsletter, the first of which you should have already received. Please do let us know what you think - we welcome all feedback, good and bad!
November focus: 'Child on child abuse'
It is important to recognise that abuse to children isn’t always perpetrated by adults; children can abuse other children and it can happen both inside and outside of educational settings and online. This is referred to as ‘child-on-child abuse’ and can include:
- bullying, including cyberbullying
- physical abuse such as hitting, kicking, shaking, biting or otherwise causing physical harm; this may include an online element which facilitates, threatens and/or encourages physical abuse
- abuse in intimate personal relationships between peers
- sexual harassment such as sexual comments, remarks, jokes and online sexual harassment
- consensual and non-consensual sharing of nude and semi-nude images and/or videos (remember - children cannot give consent under the age of 13)
All staff are trained to recognise the indicators and signs of child-on-child abuse and know how to identify and respond to reports in line with our Child Protection Policy.
Staff understand the importance of challenging inappropriate behaviours between children that are actually abusive in nature.
Downplaying certain behaviours as ‘banter’, ‘just having a laugh’ or ‘part of growing up’ can lead to a culture of unacceptable behaviours, an unsafe environment and risks normalising abuse leading to children accepting it as normal and therefore not coming forward to report it.
