There is much to celebrate and be happy about as we come to the end of another busy week. Our Y5 pupils have enjoyed the most wonderful visit to Seville, and I am so proud of the fantastic feedback we have received about their behaviour throughout the trip - excellent ambassadors for their school, families and country!
As I write, I am looking forward to hearing about how our Year 6 footballers have got on during their trip to the ISA National Football Finals - well done to them for representing our school and thanks to Mr Bower for leading this opportunity to travel to St George's Park in Staffordshire.
Congratulations to our new House Captains and Vice-Captains who have taken up office this week, and many thanks to Miss Salter and 2CS who delivered a brilliant assembly this morning, acting out the story of 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.
Our youngest children in Prep Prep continue to delight us all with their sunny outlook on life - they truly are confident and excited little learners and have grown so much during this year.
I look forward to our Open Morning next Tuesday and the opportunity to showcase Oakfield with the help of our Head Girl and Boy and Year 6 tour guides.
I have been inspired this week through reading the work of Meik Wiking in his book 'The Key to Happiness'. He identifies key areas of life that bring the greatest happiness to people; this is something that will be interesting for us as a school as we reflect upon and enhance the pastoral care that we deliver to our children.

'Mad About Minibeasts'
Lower Foundation are thoroughly enjoying their new topic ‘Mad About Minibeasts’.
This week the children’s focus has been land minibeasts, such as snails and slugs. The children created colourful 3D snails by using different size circles to represent the snails' shell; they look fabulous!
The children have found out lots of interesting facts, such as: snails have 2 eyes and 2 feelers for smelling, slugs are completely deaf and they are both nocturnal.
This week in Upper Foundation we have been focusing on story structure, encouraging the children to write stories using a beginning, middle and end.
We have looked at a variety of fairy tales and traditional stories, and the children have talked about their favourite characters.
In Maths, we have continued work on 100 squares, looking at number patterns and filling in missing numbers.
It was great to see so many parents attending our Learning Journey afternoon. We hope you enjoyed seeing all the hard work your children have done.
Please could we remind parents to play an active role in sharing their children’s learning and achievements on Tapestry by uploading photographs and commenting on their child’s progress and milestones each week. This week on Tapestry, we would like a short video of your child telling a story with a beginning, middle and end.
Next week, we will be focusing on the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Year 1 had great fun playing outside this week in the lovely weather. We were using the parachute to play different games that encouraged team work and tactics. The children loved learning new games as well as remembering their old favourites. We are really looking forward to more outdoor learning this term!

Science in Year 3
In Year 3 this week, we have been learning about rocks and soils in our science lessons. We have learned about the three main types of rock: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic, and how each of these are formed. For our experiment, we tested different rocks for different properties.
We have learnt new key words such as permeable and impermeable and talked about erosion. We enjoyed watching the chalk stone fizz with vinegar and saw how easy it was to erode pumice stone. The children confidently conducted a fair test and recorded their findings clearly on a results table. Well done Year Three!
Drama in Year 4
This term in Drama we are working on character. This is the final part of our learning journey for 2018/2019 : ensemble (autumn term), storytelling (spring term) and character (summer term).
Each week our sessions include, warm up, moving onto today’s chosen skills of focus and concentration and through to games and finally into performances. This week we played the Itch game, exploring building tensions and contrasts, we entered into a round robin chorus of tap dancing and we built character statues in ever changing number groups.

Parent Forum - Creative Arts

Year 6 Young Enterprise
Life is very busy in Y6!
This week, Year 6 had a talk by Jeremy Barnes as further preparation for their Young Enterprise project. They are setting up their own small business ready for the Enterprise Fair. Jeremy explain the basic principles of business and how to ensure that you make money! Very important! Each group is getting on well with their preparations so keep the afternoon of 24th May free!
On Thursday, our fantastic school chef spoke to Year 6 about what inspired her to become a chef and how she trained and worked her way to being Head chef at Oakfield. An inspiring talk to start of our series of different people coming to share what inspired them to get into their particular profession. Thank you very much Angela, and again, watch this space!
Other challenges faced this week include:
in Maths, learning how to draw and plot bearings on a map by following a set of instructions to locate treasure. Some children went on to draw their own treasure maps
in English, further planning and drafting ideas for their book
….... in Science, and
Singing and drama rehearsals for our productions. There is so much to do!
Royal Russell's Annual Maths Competition
On Wednesday afternoon four boys from Year 4; Hal, Matthew, Edward and Cole travelled to Royal Russell to take part in their annual Year 5 Maths Competition (Year 5 are in Spain!)
There were 4 rounds and in each round they had 2 puzzles and a list of written questions to answer, they then enjoyed a Maths Magic Show teaching us tricks to solve tricky maths calculations.
Well done to the boys for doing so well and representing Oakfield!
Food Chains
This week in Science Year 6 have been learning about Food Chains. Here are some of our examples.
Girls' U11 Football Match vs. Sydenham High School
A big well done to our U11 Girls' Football Team who played very well against Sydenham High School on Monday afternoon. One of our teams won 3-1, and our other team drew 1-1. They have been preparing for the ISFA Football Finals which take place next week.
Girls' U9 Netball League
On Tuesday the U9 Girls' Netball Team played in their first Netball League held at Streatham and Clapham Prep School. Our girls played very well, and won 2 out of their 3 matches!
A big thank you to all of the parents who have come to support at fixtures this week!
OAFS Colossal Currency Collection!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the foreign currency collection this week. An incredible amount of notes and coins have been donated in currencies from all over the world!
Thank you also to Mrs Fidler and the pupils of the school council who have helped with the collection and the promotion of the event.
Sorting and counting will take place next week and we will let you know how much Sterling we raise from the takings - watch this space!
