Course Selection 2023-2024
Course selection for the 2023-2024 school year is upon us! Below is the timeline for selection, along with some helpful resources to look at between now and when you input your selections. Do not hesitate to reach out to your counselor with any questions or concerns.
Attention SENIORS!
Community Service Reminder
50 hours of community service is part of your graduation requirements. If you have not completed this requirement, please turn in any completed hours to your school counselor. Completed forms must be turned in no later than May 1st. Opportunities are listed here: Community Service
Future Plans & Acceptances
As you hear back from colleges you have been accepted to, please let your school counselor know! If you have other plans for after high school, we would love to share those as well! Please use this form to let us know (note: you can fill this out more than once, so every time you get an acceptance- be sure to share it with us!)
Financial Aid Night- March 9th
On Thursday, March 9th, from 6:00-7:30 pm in the MHS Learning Center, we will be hosting a Financial Aid Night. Jessica Whittier, a college access counselor from The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) will be presenting on a variety of topics that will include completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), searching/applying for scholarships, and how to interpret college financial aid award letters.

Career Planning
The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard will be hosting a hiring event on Tuesday, March 7th from 12-3pm at the Holiday Inn in Portsmouth (300 Woodbury Ave). See the link below for more details.
City Year AmeriCorps members play a critical role in helping students connect with their school community and engage in their learning. City Year was founded in 1988 as a national service program to unite young adults from diverse backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time community service. City Year has grown from 50 corps members in Boston to more than 3,000 members serving in 29 US cities, as well as in South Africa and the UK.
Pratt & Whitney is actively seeking current high school seniors who are interested in entering the workforce immediately following graduation. JUNIORS
College Admissions Panel Night- March 22nd
On Wednesday, March 22nd from 6:00-7:30 pm, Marshwood High School juniors and their families are invited to York High School’s Auditorium for a College Admissions Panel Night. Admissions Counselors from American University, SMCC, Stonehill College, UVM, and Wentworth Institute of Technology will be present to provide an overview of their application review process and answer any questions.
QuestBridge College Prep Scholars Program
Applying to college can seem daunting, and the prospect of paying for it can seem even more overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. The College Prep Scholars Program equips high-achieving high school juniors from low-income backgrounds with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to apply to top colleges.The 2023 College Prep Scholars Program application is now open! The deadline is Wednesday, March 22nd.
Horatio Alger Scholarship
- The Horatio Alger Association will be awarding one $25,000 scholarship and five $10,000 scholarships to current juniors from Maine. The Association provides guidance and support, which is why they are now selecting high school JUNIORS so that they can provide additional assistance and preparation to all scholarship recipients.
- All the information and the application are on the official website: https://scholars.horatioalger.org/. The deadline to apply is March 15th, 2023. Don't miss out on this great opportunity!
SATs
The SATs will be administered at MHS on Wednesday, March 22nd for all juniors who registered to take them. The test will be administered in the gym and will begin at 7:30am. Students should bring a calculator and two #2 pencil(s). Registered students will receive an email to confirm their registration in the next few weeks. Students are encouraged to prepare for the SATs by using online prep. One free resource is Khan Academy, which includes practice exams, tips & strategies, and more.
PROM
PROM is coming, and so is the YCSA's 2nd Annual STYLIN' FOR THE PROM! event!
SOPHOMORES
SRTC Application next steps: If you are a Sophomore or Junior (1yr program) who is interested in applying for a Career Technical Program please follow these steps:
- SRTC Application Deadline: Friday, 3/3/23 It is recommended that students apply even if they are undecided about whether or not they want to be a part of a career tech program. By applying, you are not committing to a career tech program for the next 1-2yrs. Application
- All applications must be in by this date or you will not be considered for an interview at one of the programs.
- SRTC Virtual Interviews at MHS: March 21st or March 22nd - students selected by SRTC for an interview will be scheduled for one of the above dates. Interviews will be conducted virtually in the Counseling Offices during the school day.
- Important interview tip: Dress appropriately (even though it is virtual), conduct yourself respectfully, show your interest in the program by coming with questions to ask the instructor for the program! Counselors will offer an interview prep session on 3/17 during advisory.
- SRTC Decisions: You will find out if you have been accepted or not to an SRTC program by April break. Once you have been accepted, you will need to decide if you are commiting to the program or not by letting your school counselor know.

We've compiled a document with some of our favorites, but there are even more opportunities out there! Be sure to bookmark the page and check frequently as new opportunities are always being added.

Community Resources
The End 68 Hours of Hunger (E68) Program provides students within our school an opportunity to access a bag of nourishing food that will last them throughout the weekend. If you or your child is interested in receiving a bag of food on a weekly basis, please contact your child’s school counselor. The bag will then be placed in a convenient, private location in the building to be picked up.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in this opportunity. E68 is available for any student who would benefit, there are no restrictions.
