Sasha B. Art 1 Portfolio/ winter 2022/ strath haven hs.

This is by far my favorite school project I've made in my Art 1 class. While a tedious process, I enjoyed this project a lot. The concept had me stumped at first, and I couldn't quite figure out what I wanted to do. Since this project was a time-consuming one, I wanted to be sure that I picked a design that wouldn't tire or bore me after 2 weeks. Not only do I love bears, but I am incredibly proud of my free-handed bear sketch. My favorite thing about this painting is the small scenes within the outer boxes, for example; the eye in the lower-left corner, the city and planet scenes in the upper-left middle, and the snakes in the lower right-hand corner. I was also proud of how the bear itself turned out considering I ran out of ideas and color combinations very quickly. Instead of sticking to basic boxes with solid colors, I used the salt, paper towel, and saran wrap methods and outlined the patterns made with a black pen. I thought that that idea was smart and I was very proud. I learned to be patient throughout this project and that the finished project is worth the wait. I also learned that drawing what you love makes it more fun and meaningful. Overall, I feel that this painting was a success.
My name project was one of my favorite projects that we did in class. Not only was the concept super fun, but it gave me an opportunity to get creative and draw about what I love. Each box represents something about me in one way or another and I thought that adding those pieces of myself gave my project a lot of meaning. I had a lot of fun freehanding the different boxes and outlining them, and I just thought the entire process was fun. I had to hold myself back when it came to adding colors besides grayscale but I ended up liking how clean the black and white looked. I learned new techniques and new ways to add words to art. I felt as though I really spoke through this piece and I’m proud of that. Overall, I felt very successful throughout the process of creating this project and the finished product got good reviews from my classmates during our peer-opinion exercise. I am very happy with my work.
This painting was finished on the last day of class, yet I am so proud of how it turned out. I struggled to find a concept I really liked for this project but I ended up picking my two favorite places and going off of them. Ever since my sister and I were little, we’ve always compared ourselves to mountains and the ocean. My sister loves the beach with her whole heart, as do I, but I’ve always slightly preferred the serenity of a mountain scene and my hiking trips throughout various National parks will always be special to me. To us, my sister is the waves and I’m the mountains. We even want matching tattoos of the sun and moon rising over the beach for her and the mountains for me. This painting reminds me of the bond I have with my older sister and makes me feel at home. I love the idea that the two scenes are somewhat symmetrical but at the same time, polar opposites. The use of warm and cool shades was tricky but I figured it out and I am proud of myself for completing this project in a short amount of time, I truly did not expect to love it so much considering acrylics are not one of my favorite mediums to work with.
Overall, this class has taught me a lot of useful techniques. As someone who wants a career in art, I’ve never taken a class where I’ve experimented with so many different concepts and techniques. Some I excelled in and others I didn’t, whereas in other classes there has been no middle ground. I struggled at times but flew through other sections of our course. I really enjoyed our watercolor experiments, and I loved learning different techniques like saran wrap and salt to create patterns. I feel for the first time that I am excelling in acrylic painting, and I’ve learned to love using them which I didn’t before. I learned a lot about my strengths and weaknesses, and found that I love oil and chalk pastels. I came into this course expecting to fly through everything but I was pleasantly surprised when I realized I had a lot to learn still. I love learning new things and techniques and it was refreshing to add some new tips and tricks to my previous knowledge. I learned a lot from this course and I’m so thankful that I was able to take it.
