Fork Union Welcomed Shenandoah University to Campus for a Direct Admission Event
On Wednesday, November 9, Fork Union Military Academy welcomed admission representative Cera Graves from Shenandoah University to campus to host an admission event. In a direct admission event, students may apply for admission on the spot, meet with the college admission representative, and, after reviewing the student's records and transcripts, the admission representative may offer the student immediate acceptance to college. This gives colleges and well-qualified students a significant shortcut in the traditionally cumbersome college admissions process.
Fork Union Military Academy had 10 seniors take advantage of this event, and we are ecstatic to say all 10 of these cadets received acceptance on Wednesday to Shenandoah University.

This Week's College Acceptances
It's that time of year again when our seniors get the exciting news of college acceptances!
Our goal each year is that 100% of our seniors gain college acceptance, and the Class of 2023 is already on track to achieve that goal. Our seniors are working hard with the College Placement and Academic Services team under the leadership of the department's Director, Kelsey Hill, and the Assistant Director, Dr. James Benson.
Check out this week's acceptances!
Congratulations, gentlemen!
Fork Union Opens Debate Season at James River High School
The Fork Union Military Academy debate team opened the season at James River High School this past weekend. Cadets Matthew Vinso, Ethan Schroyer, and Jackson Pretus led the way for Fork Union placing in the top four in their respective divisions.
Vinso won the extemporaneous speaking category. Schroyer placed third in his chamber of student congress, while Pretus took fourth in his chamber of student congress. Pretus was also elected best senator by his fellow competitors.
“I am thrilled with the results and am incredibly proud of the first timers who worked through the nerves and fear to compete,” said CPT Michael Head. “In my opinion, the biggest win of the day is that all our debaters spoke enough times to qualify for a trophy, while many first-time competitors spend their first meet spectating. I am looking forward to our December meet with the momentum these guys have now.”
Fork Union will compete at the University of Lynchburg’s Snowball Tournament on Saturday, December 10.
Fork Union Celebrates Veterans Day
Last Friday, the Academy celebrated Veterans Day with its annual Veterans Ceremony. It was a rainy day, so the ceremony was celebrated in the Wicker Chapel. Fork Union welcomed the guest speaker Colonel Stuart Harrison to campus.
Before enjoying the photos, please take the time to read a message from Academy President Colonel David Coggins:
November 11th is Veterans Day. We remember.
Wars are so horrible, but necessary for our defense. On this day in 1918 at 1100 the world stopped for a moment of silence. It was a war to end all wars. We remember.
In our Veteran’s Day ceremony on campus held on 11/11 at 1100 hours, we will hear about those who have gone before us and for those veterans gathered, we’ll honor them in person. We will have a moment of silence at 11:11.
We hope for wars no more, but the reality is that there will always be wars and rumors of war. There will also be a call for those to defend freedom. We remember.
For those who served honorably we thank you. Welcome home. We remember.
In Christ,
Colonel David L. Coggins, USMC (Ret.) | President | Fork Union Military Academy

CPT Mark Black Recognized as Teacher of the Term for Term 1
Fork Union Military Academy congratulates CPT Mark Black for being named Teacher of the Term for Term 1 of the 2022-2023 academic year. Cadets submit nominations for the Teacher of the Term at the conclusion of each grading term. The cadet nominations are reviewed and evaluated by the Teacher of the Term/Year Committee, which is comprised of non-academic staff members. After considering cadet nominations, the Committee announces the Teacher of the Term.
CPT Black is in his second year at the Academy and taught US Military and War History during Term 1. He is a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, Air War College and the University of Virginia. CPT Black is retired from the Navy and completed TOPGUN in February of 1992.
Outside of the classroom, CPT Black assists prep football and prep lacrosse.
CPT Black received nominations that stated:
"CPT Black does a great job explaining the subject, making sure everyone understands and gives anyone who doesn't understand the help they need. He takes pride in his job and goes to great lengths to make sure it's interesting to everyone. He is a great teacher overall."
"CPT Black treats us students like we are his own. He makes sure we understand the topic and will spend extra time to make sure we know the topic. He has a lot of patience with students that struggle and is a role model to us. He gives real world and real-life advice. CPT Black gives all of us someone to look up to when we have problems in or out of the classroom."
"CPT Black is not only the best teacher on campus but is one of the best men on campus. He always explains and makes it known exactly what he wants and teaches in a way that none of us can forget."
Congratulations, CPT Black.

Fork Union Places First at the Gordonsville Veterans Parade
This past weekend, the Fork Union Military Academy Band attended a Veterans Day parade in Gordonsville, Virginia. These young men have been practicing tirelessly for the past eight weeks to prepare for this event. About half of the cadets in the band first picked up their instrument at the beginning of this school year, just two short months ago. More than half had never experienced a performance style like this before, yet they impressed everyone who saw them with their professionalism and musicianship.
Four high school bands were entered to be judged in this parade, and the judges and hundreds of spectators were completely wow’ed by our cadets and their abilities. This led to their selection for first place in the band category. This is the first time in over 10 years that the Fork Union Military Academy Band has won a trophy at the Gordonsville parade.
"As their band director, they have come in on many days and said, 'sir, can’t we take it easy one of these days?' And I’ve had to tell them to wait for the results," said ETN1(SS) John Warren. "Well, they felt those results last weekend. You could see the genuine joy on many of their faces when they announced that for the first time in over 10 years, they were the winners. They came back to campus with a sense of pride that many haven’t felt before. The hours of practice, of me yelling corrections over the beat of the drums, of the drum major and section leaders working tirelessly to mentor the newer musicians. They all realized it was worth it and the resounding question I get is 'when can we do that again?' Fortunately, the answer to that question is on December 2nd and December 3rd, when we will be doing two more parades where they will be judged. The band will now be spending their time practicing Christmas music and preparing for even bigger and better competitions. What these young men have accomplished in eight weeks has made me so proud and I know that with their drive, work ethic, and desire to stand on top, they will continue to impress me and every other person who looks at the band."
Congratulations, gentlemen!
Four Accepted into Lee University's Honors Band
Each year, Lee University School of Music brings together the top high school students from Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia to spend three days learning from the professors, practicing together, and finally performing a concert for the college on the final day.
This year, four musicians from Fork Union Military Academy were selected to attend. Peter Signorino, James Robinson, Kelvin Montesinos, and George Boitano are currently at the Lee University School of Music practicing with the composers and directors on staff there to explore new areas of music until Saturday.
"Our program focuses primarily on high tempo marches, since we are a regimental marching band," said Band Director ETN1(SS) John Warren. "Right now they are experiencing what big concert style band music is like. It’s a great experience for them and they are learning a lot. Cadet Robinson said after the first three hour practice, 'sir, the song tempos are slower than my heartbeat! I’m not used to that!', this just shows how much they can take away from playing with musicians of this caliber. As their director, I’m extremely proud and excited for the opportunity that they have this week."
