When I first arrived at Lake Munmorah High at the start of term 3 2022, I was greeted with warmth and open arms. From that very moment, I knew I had entered a special community, one that embraced diversity, inclusion, creativity, and a genuine passion for learning. It has been an absolute privilege to be part of this remarkable public high school, surrounded by dedicated teachers, supportive staff, and, most importantly, exceptional students.

To the teachers and staff, thank you for your unwavering commitment to our students. Your passion, expertise, and tireless efforts have shaped the lives of countless individuals and will continue to do so in the years to come. Your dedication to education is truly commendable, and I am honoured to have worked alongside each one of you.

May the school continue to foster an environment of kindness, inclusivity, and support, ensuring that every student who walks through these doors feels valued, inspired, and empowered.

Thank you, Lake Munmorah High School, for an unforgettable chapter in my life. I will cherish the memories and am grateful to have been a part of this community. I firmly believe that the future holds incredible things for all our students.

Science - Faculty Report

It has been an eventful and enriching term here at the Science Faculty, filled with exciting experiences and valuable learning opportunities. Let's dive into the highlights of the term and explore the remarkable activities our students have been engaged in.

Zoo Snooze Excursion: Year 7 students embarked on a thrilling adventure during the Zoo Snooze excursion at Taronga Zoo. The students had a unique opportunity to spend the night at the zoo, surrounded by fascinating animals. From snakes and reptiles to possums and monkeys, they observed these creatures up close and personal. Moreover, being there during the vibrant Vivid festival added an extra touch of magic as they explored the zoo at night, admiring the stunning lights. The students had an incredible time, although we're certain they looked forward to a comfortable night's sleep in their own beds the following night!

Transition Week: In week 9, we opened our labs to incoming year 5 and 6 students from our feeder schools. These young minds had the chance to experience analytical chemistry firsthand through a unit called 'Mystery Powders.' They eagerly investigated the properties of various white powders, conducting experiments and making observations to determine their identities. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire Science Faculty for their hard work in making this week a resounding success.

Luna Park Adventure: Week 10 was a thrilling ride for our Year 10 students as they embarked on a trip to Luna Park as part of their physics of motion unit. Experiencing Newton's Laws in action, they had a blast exploring the amusement park while learning about fundamental principles of physics. This day was undoubtedly a success, and we extend a special thank you to Mrs. Hudson for organizing this exhilarating experience.

Furthermore, let's take a closer look at what our students have been learning this term:

Year 7: Our Year 7 students delved into the lithosphere, exploring the world of rocks and the Earth's movement in space. Some classes even had the delightful task of examining the properties of rocks using chocolate and lollies—a truly sweet approach to geology! Other exciting practicals student participated in included the creation of moon phases using Oreos, and making rainbow density columns.

Year 8: In their studies of body systems and ecosystems, Year 8 students had the opportunity to engage in firsthand experiences through dissections. While it may be a bit confronting for those with weak stomachs, these experiences are undeniably fascinating and contribute to a deeper understanding of the intricate workings of our bodies and the natural world.

Year 9: Year 9 students explored body responses and disease, along with an introduction to ecosystems. Some classes took part in hands-on experiments investigating the impacts of the environment on living creatures. By growing seedlings and subjecting them to different conditions such as salty water, absence of light, and varying temperatures, they gained valuable insights into the delicate balance of ecosystems.

Year 10: Concluding their unit on motion, Year 10 students shifted their focus to the captivating realm of chemistry. They explored different types of chemical reactions and actively participated in a wide range of exciting and informative practical experiments in the lab.

We are immensely proud of our students' engagement and enthusiasm throughout the term. Their dedication to scientific exploration and inquiry has been commendable, and we applaud their efforts in making each learning experience truly memorable.

As the term comes to a close, we look forward to new adventures and discoveries in the upcoming term. Let's continue fostering a passion for science and nurturing inquisitive minds. Remember, science is all around us, waiting to be explored!

Wishing you all a restful break and a renewed sense of curiosity.

What a term it has been Year 10! I still can't believe we are at the halfway point of the year!

Term 2 has been an incredibly busy Term for our ear 10 students with a multitude of wellbeing programs being run, offsite excursion and the subject selection process! I do have to say it has been really exciting engaging in conversation with various Year 10 students about what subjects they are thinking of picking for senior studies and more importantly how that will assist them in their chosen careers.

During Term 2 I had the privilege to be present to support Year 10 during a variety of programs including the Love Bites program. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Year 10 on their maturity and engagement during the program which often covers topics that can be very hard to talk about and engage in for our students. The highlight of the day was being able to sit down with everyone and use creativity to demonstrate learning about relationships and consent.

This term I was also lucky enough to be asked to tag along for the ear 10 Science excrusion to Luna Park! It was another great opportunity to have conversations with the Year 10 students and continue to learn new things about them (even some students fear of rides - you know who you are). It was a great day down in Sydney and every single student was respectful and represented LMHS to a high standard.

Year 11 - Mrs Sarah Patterson

Dear Year 11 students, parents/carers, and community members,

Congratulations on completing two productive terms as senior students! As we approach the winter holidays, take a moment to reflect on your progress and areas for further growth. Remember, it is normal to be in the development stages as you navigate new course material. Do not be too hard on yourselves.

To ensure continued progress, reach out to your classroom teachers for support and guidance. They are here to assist you and provide the resources needed to excel in your studies. Do not hesitate to ask questions or share any concerns you may have.

As your Year Advisor, I am here to support your academic and personal success. Feel free to turn to me for guidance, advice, and a listening ear. I am dedicated to providing tailored support for your needs. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, and I am here to help you thrive.

For those who experienced the MONA trip, I hope it was memorable. And to those eagerly awaiting the snow trip, may it be filled with excitement and unforgettable moments. These experiences contribute to your overall growth, so make the most of them.

During the winter break, take care of yourselves and recharge. Rest, prepare, and get ready for the challenges and opportunities of Term 3. Attend study breaks to complete pending work and plan for upcoming assessments. Effective goal setting and time management will keep you organised and maximize your studies.

Thank you for your hard work and commitment these past two terms. I am proud of your achievements so far and look forward to an exciting and productive Term 3.

Wishing you a safe and enjoyable winter break!

Mrs Patterson (Patto)

Year 12 - Mr Malcolm Van Drempt

Hi all, we are now making headway through the year. There are a few upcoming dates of note this year. The Graduation Ceremony will be held on the morning of Wednesday the 20th of September (Term 3 Week 10) 2023 in the Hall. We are extending an invitation for you to attend to see your young adult graduate. On November 23rd 2023 we will be holding our Year 12 Formal at the Pullman Magenta Shores Resort (1 Magenta Drive, Magenta NSW).

Year 12 would also like to extend a big thank you to the community for their support in their fundraisers this term. Both the athletics carnival and the Jersey day fundraisers were successful. Thank you to all who baked goods for the cake stall.

A reminder to students to keep their study life and home life in the balance as we go into next term. Remember to get plenty of sleep, exercise and healthy food, but be just as careful not to use these as tools for procrastination. If you need support please contact myself, your classroom teachers or pop into the Wellbeing Hub for a chat.

Just as important is the way you present yourself. Your uniform is an expression of how seriously you take yourself and your study. Please come to school each day in full school uniform.

Finally, a big thank you to Mr Patrick who took over the Year Adviser role in my absence this term.
