Learning Acceleration

With a shift from remediating student learning to accelerating student learning, we can more quickly close the gap between the students who begin the school year behind grade level and their on-grade level peers.

How do we shift even more toward learning acceleration using the principles of personalized learning?

We will look at three specific things we might be doing and how we can use instructional technology to help us shift towards even better learning acceleration and personalized learning.

1. Flexible groups

You might be using concrete groups based but what if you used more flexible groupings in your classroom? [just-in-time direct instruction]

While diagnostic data is a great resource, it is very important to be formatively assessing students throughout a unit to monitor their progress towards mastery of the learning target. You can take informal or formal formative assessment data to create unique, flexible groups based on specific skills and the students' level of mastery.

But how?!

Use Microsoft Forms branching feature to collect pre-assessment of formative assessment data!

2. Engage students in the 5 E's

You might be making students engagement in the same way at the same time but what it you allow students to explore content at their own pact in their own way [varied strategies, voice and choice, choice in demonstrating learning]

"The 5E Model allows educators to create a unique learning experience for students. Teachers who can incorporate instructional models like the 5E Model into their classrooms help students build a strong foundation of knowledge through active participation." -Lesley Edu

Utilizing the idea of the 5E model, teachers can create learning contracts and/or choice boards to allow students to move through their learning in their own way in their own time.

3. Student Reflection and portfolio

You might share your observations with students about their learning but what if you allow students to reflect on their own learning? [co-planning learning]

Portfolios allow students to regularly reflect on their learning process—deepening their connection to content.

It is a good idea to brainstorm what you want students to have in their portfolio. You may want them to upload specific artifacts or complete specific reflection questions in writing or in a video.
