Gimel is a vibrant village within the Parc du Jura Vaudois in the French speaking part of Switzerland.

At the edge of it there is a lovely wood called Le Bois de la Rosière and just at its entrance lies the quaint little chapel of the same name.

This is a Catholic chapel so not the main place of worship in Gimel - but its charming and unassuming demeanor surrounded by woodland and open field is definitely worth a mention, and the short walk from the village centre.

The chapel of the Rosière nestles into the side of the wood and looks out over agricultural land to the Alps in the distance. The sound of cowbells from the farm across the small road provides the perfect soundtrack to the idyllic setting of the chapel.

It is an unimposing but picturesque building with very pretty stained-glass windows.

Unfortunately, the chapel was closed and we could only catch a glimpse of the simple interior and colourful stained glass windows. To get inside you need to time it right. It is open every Monday from 17.30 to 18.30 and every last Friday of the month at 18.00, or by appointment.

The woodland of Le Bois de la Rosière is well used by the people of Gimel for walking, exercising, horse riding and picnicking. The ‘voies vertes’ or green pathways are well maintained and suitable for wheelchair access, and there are even keep fit tips at the entrance.

Our visit took place in the perfection of Spring: the woods still shining with wonderful sunlight peeping through new emerald leaves, brightly coloured local flowers welcoming us along the pathways and bird song filling the air.

But whatever the time, we highly recommend a stroll to the Chappelle de la Rosière, a peaceful walk in the woodland, then a cup of coffee and a cake at Gimel’s friendly cafe and bakery.
