Wish You Well by David Baldacci
Simile
The notebook was open on her lap, and Lou was filling the blank pages with writings of importance to her, as a fisherman does his net (1).
This is an example of a simile because it is comparing Lou filling the pages with writing to a fisherman filling his net with fish. Also, this sentence uses "as" to make the comparison. This makes this sentence a simile.
Metaphor
Jack's eyes were silver dollars of panic (13).
This is a metaphor because it uses a form of the verb "to be." In addition, Jack's eyes become silver dollars, so it is comparing his wide-open eyes to large silver dollars. For these two reasons, that is why this sentence is a metaphor.
Hyperbole
"Mule and your daddy ended up in the hog pen with enough slop on both choke a bear" (101).
This is an example of a hyperbole because it is an exaggeration. It's saying that the mule and the girl's daddy had so much pig slop on them that it could have choked a bear. This is another way of saying they both got really dirty, but this example is more interesting because it gives the reader a hilarious picture in their mind.
Personification
Smoke belched from each stack, turning the darkening sky ever blacker.
This quote is an example of personification because a train stack cannot physically belch. A person can belch, so this sentence makes the train more like a person. This makes this example of figurative language personification.
