Relationship & Health Education Sacred Heart Catholic Primary

What Is Our Vision?

At Sacred Heart we believe that one of the most crucial ways we can help to prepare our children for the future is through teaching about the characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults. This is taught alongside the essential understanding of how to make positive choices regarding our health and why this is important.

As part of our Relationship and Health Education, our children will develop their undertsnading of positive relationships within the context of Christian teachings. Through the use of TenTen, our children will not only have high-quality RHE but also a rich foundation for growth, personal development and happy, fulfilled relationships.

Our Approach

In our school we follow a structured programme for the delivery of Relationship & Health Education called TenTen. The entire teaching is underpinned with a Christian faith understanding that our deepest identity is as a child of God – created, chosen and loved by God. The programme is fully inclusive of all pupils and their families.

Taught with a spiral approach to learning, the programme includes teaching about personal health, physical and emotional well-being, strong emotions, private parts of the body, personal relationships, family structures, trusted adults, growing bodies, puberty, periods, life cycles, where babies come from, the dangers of social media, staying safe online, undertsanding the dangers of different substances and the impact they have on our bodies and an understanding of the Common Good and living in the wider world.

As a school with mixed age classes we have made judgements about where and when specific langauge and topics will be introduced to our children. This ensures that our children have an appropriate level of maturity for the topics being delivered as well as anabling us to talk to parents about specific langauge their children may use or questions they may have at a given point in the curriculum.

Curriculum Impact

The implementation of this curriculum will ensure pupils at Sacred Heart experience an engaging, fun and high-quality Relationship & Health education. Pupils will understand hat a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who the people are who can support them. They will understand how to make appropariate choices to remain healthy and why this is important.

Through discussion our children will develop their understanding of positive choices for health and relationships within the context of their own lives and their Christian faith.

We will measure the impact of Relationship & Health Education through:

  • Pupil attainment data
  • Pupil voice
  • Learning walks
  • Lesson drop ins
  • Work scrutinies

In our RHE lessons some of the things you will see are:

  • High expectations for pupil outcomes.
  • Pupils developing questioning skills.
  • Pupils discussing their own experiences and their understanding of Christian beliefs.
  • Pupils developing new knowledge and integrating this with their previous understanding of topics.
