WORLD NEWS

As the conflict in Eastern Europe intensifies, we want all of our students, families, and staff with roots in Ukraine and Russia to know of our deep concern for you, and our continuing care for you as members of our Mukilteo School District community. In the days ahead, and especially as many return to school this week, please remember to reach out to our staff when you need support. We have counselors, support specialists, and family engagement liaisons who can help connect students and families with resources in troubling times.

Music Room Happenings!

Here’s what’s been happening in Mrs. Thompson's music room the last couple months of school…

In primary music, we continue working through the First Steps music curriculum in a “Tuneful, Beat-ful, Artful” way. We practice keeping steady beat with our beat buddies and using our different voices: whisper, speaking, and singing. Most-requested songs to sing have included “Down By the Bay” and “The Rattlin’ Bog.” We visit “Ariosoland,” a magical land where there’s only singing with puppets. We use small percussion instruments from the woods, metals, and skins (drums) to play along with songs. Songtales (illustrated books with song lyrics) are sometimes used at the end of music class. Students work together to earn a game day each trimester as well!

In intermediate music, 3rd graders have been drumming with the World Music Drumming curriculum and playing along to Sea Shanties and other songs as well as playing Boomwhackers (colorful tuned percussion tubes) in the C Major Scale. 4th and 5th graders have been working through a guitar unit, playing melodies on the E strings of ¾ -size acoustic guitars with a basic intro to guitar TAB. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders also worked through a piano/keyboard unit with the song Hot Cross Buns. Left and right hands playing different parts was a fun challenge.

State Testing

In Spring, all students at Serene Lake in grades 3-5 will take the Smarter Balanced Assessments in English/Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, and students in grade 5 will also take a science test (Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science, or WCAS). These state assessments are one of many ways we use to know whether students have mastered the skills and knowledge they need to be successful at the next grade level.

When will my child take the tests?

3rd Grade

  • ELA-May 17th &18th
  • Math- May 24th &25th

4th Grade

  • ELA-May 17th &18th
  • Math- May 24th &25

5th Grade

  • WCAS- May 17th & 18th
  • Math-May 24th &25th

From the Health Room

Your child may have been exposed to head lice while at school. While this is inconvenient, it is not life threatening. However, your immediate attention is required to insure that the nuisance is not spread. Please follow the guidelines below. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the office.

Ways To Prevent the Spread of Lice

  • Do not share combs, hair brushes, towels, hats, helmets, bedding, or pillows.
  • Avoid hanging hats and coats next to others’ clothing.

What To Look For

  • Excessive scratching of head, especially at the back of the head just above the neck.
  • Nits on the hair. These are usually pearly-grey in color and are attached to the hair shaft near the scalp.
  • Nits are distinguished from dandruff because they stick to the hair shaft.

What To Do If You Find Nits

  • Treat your child and all household members with a lice shampoo recommended by your pharmacist. Follow all instructions carefully!
  • Use a nit comb after treatment to remove lice from hair shafts. A 10% vinegar rinse helps to loosen the nits from the hair shafts.
  • Wash all bed linens and washable clothing in hot water.
  • Place all non-washable items such as stuffed toys in a sealed plastic bag for 21 days.
  • Vacuum furniture, rugs and floors.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL FRIDAY, JUNE 17!

Because of the school closure on January 3 due to snow, one make-up day has been added to the end of this school year. Thursday, June 16, will be a regular school day and Friday, June 17, will be an early dismissal for all students. The revised year-at-a-glance calendar is attached and updated on the district website.

VOLUNTEERS

As of March 7, 2022, volunteers must also show proof of vaccination as part of the approval process. Boosters are not currently required for volunteers. Vaccination exemptions or accommodations are not available for volunteers at this time. You will need to show your ID and proof of vaccination to the office staff when submitting the Washington State Patrol Volunteer Forms.

If you're thinking about volunteering please be sure to fill out forms ahead of time. No volunteers will be permitted on campus until the form and approval process is complete.

PTSA Teacher Wish List

The PTSA is proud to present a pilot program called Teacher Wishes (similar to Snowflake Wishes in December).

Each classroom teacher has an Amazon Wish List that they would love to have for their classroom. These are items beyond those school district provided items. Items purchased for your child's classroom teacher will be sent directly to the school!

To find your student's Teacher Wish List, go to the PTSA website under Staff Favorites: https://slptsa.memberplanet.com/

Please note: If Teacher's Amazon Wishlist has no items on the list, it may mean: 1) Items have already been purchased 2) No new items have been added.

Immunizations are required for in person school attendance and are established by the State of Washington. Students must be current in immunizations to attend school. The state law states that students who are out of compliance with immunization requirements will be excluded from school until those conditions are met. Learn more about the state’s immunization requirements on the district website.
