The sun accounts for 99.86% of the mass in the solar system. The sun is almost a perfect sphere.over one million earths can fit in the sun.One day the sun will consume the earth. The energy created by the sun´s core is nuclear fusion. The sun is the star that is in the center of are solar system made out of gas and plasma. The sun is the only natural source of light in are entire solar system. The moon is only bright at night because it reflects the light that is coming from the sun.

Mercury is the closet planet to the sun and is the smallest out of all eight of them.A year on mercury is 88 days but on earth it is 176 earth days.Despite its small size it is the second densest planet because it is composed of heavy metals and rocks.Mercury is named after the messenger of the roman gods also known as hermes in greek mythology.Mercury orbits so quickly that early civilization thought that it was two different stars.

Venus is the second planet from the sun and is the third brightest object in the earths sky.Venus is sometimes referred to as the sister of earth because its mass and size are so similar.Venus is also the closest planet to Earth. The surface of Venus is hidden by an opaque layer of clouds which are formed from sulphuric acid.Venus is sometimes referred to as morning star and evening star. The planet is named for Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty and is the second largest terrestrial planet. website: https://theplanets.org

Earth is the third planet from the Sun and largest of the terrestrial planets.Earth is the only planet in the solar system not named after a mythological being. Instead, its name is derived from the Old English word "ertha" and the Anglo-Saxon word "erda" which means ground or soil.Earth was formed somewhere around 4.54 billion years ago and is currently the only known planet to support life. website: https://theplanets.org

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and last of the terrestrial planets.Mars is named after a mythological figure - the Roman god of war. In addition to its official name, Mars is sometimes called the Red Planet because of the brownish-red color of its surface.Mars in the second smallest planet behind mercury.Despite Mars being just 15% the volume and 10% the mass of Earth, it actually has a similar landmass because water covers about 70% of Earth’s surface. The surface gravity of Mars is about 37% the gravity found on Earth. This means that on Mars you could in theory jump 3x higher than you could on Earth.

Jupiter is named after the Roman King of gods.Jupiter is the largest and most massive planet in the whole solar system. It would take 11 earths lined up to jupiter to stretch from one side of jupiter to the other side.It would take 317 earths to equal the mass of jupiter.Jupiter 67 moon orbiting it.

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and second largest planet of the Solar System in terms of diameter and mass. If compared, it is easy to see why Saturn and Jupiter have been designated as relatives. From atmospheric composition to rotation, these two planets are extremely similar. Because of these factors, Saturn was named after the father of the god Jupiter in Roman mythology.

Uranus, named after the the father of the Roman god Saturn, is the seventh planet in the Solar System and third of the gas giants. It is the third largest planet by diameter, yet fourth most massive. It takes uranus 84 earth days to rotate the sun.Uranus wind speed can reach up to 900 km per hr also known as 560 miles per hr.Uranus is often referred to as ice giant because it has an icy mantle which surrounds its rock and iron core. The upper atmosphere of water ammonia and methane ice crystals gives Uranus its distinctive pale blue color.

Due to its blue coloration Neptune was named after the Roman god of the Sea.It takes neptune 164.8 earth years to orbit the sun.Neptune has the second largest gravity in the entire solar system.Neptune has a storm similar to the great red spot on jupiter and is commonly known as the great dark spot roughly the same size as the earth. It has a second storm called the great small spot the same size as earths moon.

Space exploration allows us to prove or disprove scientific theories developed on Earth. Studying the solar system, for example, has brought us insights into such phenomena as gravity, the magnetosphere, the atmosphere, fluid dynamics and the geological evolution of other planets.Human space exploration helps to address fundamental questions about our place in the Universe and the history of our solar system.

The organization that is leading us is NASA
