THE BLACK DEATH
Class 10 returned from one lunch to find a selection of clues (primary and secondary sources of information) arranged around the walls of their classroom. They had to work in partners to investigate multiple lines of enquiry on ‘The Plague’ and its impact on the village of Eyam(1665-1666) and share their findings on Padlet.
The pupils were challenged to become experts in order to create a quiz on ‘THE BLACK DEATH’ that would help to see if the adults of Mapplewell are smarter than a 10-year-old.
They then looked into how the plague spread, the different effects on rich and poor, symptoms and outcomes, methods of avoidance, wider impacts, attempts to stop the spread and the influence on modern practices.
Class 10 then worked on achieving the outcome for their ‘The Black Death’ history topic. Each of them, using what they had covered over half-term to create a quiz about the plague. They were sure to run product testing of the quizzes in order to allow for feedback to be given and improvements to be made.
Are you smarter than 10 year-old?
A link to each child's quiz has been made available on SeeSaw for you to play at home. Please share the photos or videos of your games on Twitter or SeeSaw!
SATS
There was a big undertaking for our year 6 pupils this half-term... SATS. And each and everyone of them used this opportunity to demonstrate what they are capable of and showed off all the hard work they have put in over the years at Mapplewell. The levels of resilience and maturity were amazing.
While the BBC reported of children returning home in tears, we were so proud to hear from our pupils that they were having one of their most enjoyable weeks at school.
I do wonder how much that was to do with the mountains of Nutella on toast we were getting through during the morning 'SATS Breakfast Club'
PE - Cricket
I've been really impressed me with Class 10's cricket skills. I've started to see a range of shots and strokes being taken. And developing an awareness of when to claim runs.
Bowling technique is something Class 10 found trickier. But kept on working at resisting the urge to throw rather than bowl.
EXTRA COMPETITIONS
Members of Class 10 also had the opportunity to represent Mapplewell in competing against other schools.
Celebrations
During this half we have had lots of children show the school values and were awarded certificates! Lots of other celebrations too. Make sure you continue to share your celebrations from home with us by either bringing things into school, on Twitter or on Seesaw - we love to see them!
Home Learning
It's always fantastic to see the engagement pupils in Class 10 like to make with their own home learning. Not only their assigned homework tasks but additional topic research and creative designs.
So many members of Class 10 were inspired by their topic this half-term that they were eager to carry out additional research projects at home.
