Voices from the Climate Frontline

As a low-lying archipelagic country, the Maldives faces unique climate challenges. Our marine environment, and its associated biodiversity is critical to our ecosystem and human health, our natural and cultural heritage, and to productive livelihoods and income among others.

A series of consultations were held by UNDP Maldives prior to the recent Stockholm+50 international conference in Stockholm, Sweden. This commemorated the 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which made the environment a pressing global issue for the first time.

Here, we share with you the voices from the people at the frontline of the climate crisis in the Maldives.

We explore the delicate mangrove ecosystem of Laamu atoll and the climate change issues that communities face, such as water security and extreme weather events – through their perspective.

Highlights from the UNDP Maldives' Stockholm+50 consultations in Laamu Gan and Fonadhoo. These sessions brought forward-looking, actionable recommendations from our communities, to secure lasting impacts beyond the conference.

The public's opinions on the environmental issues facing our communites, from plastic-free beaches to overfishing.

Viewpoints from the participants of the Stockholm+50 consultations.
