The World: 1550-1650 Group3

Topic

The topic we got for our research project was how the world was going on in the world between 1550 and 1650 (excluding Britain). In this project we'll talk about different events, inventions, etc. that made up our countries during this time period

Canada

During this period, Canada is just being discovered and its rich fur resources only now being tapped into.

1603: Samuel de Champlains first voyages to Canada and maps the country
1604: Samuel then returns to look for an area to colonize in the new land
1608: Champlains finds a nice place to trade furs named Quebec
1611: Henry Hudson founds the Hudson Bay, where is son was tossed of a ship due to a mutiny.

America

During this time period America was still a growing country, with only a few colonized areas, each controlled by French, Spainish, and English settlers.

1584: Sir Walter Raleigh, a writer and poet, sends an invitation fleet to the future South Carolina
1607: Jamestown, Virginia is established
1608: The Quebec colony is established
1610: Santa Fe, New Mexico is established as the capital of a Spanish colony
1621: First Thanksgiving in Plymouth
1636-1637: The Pequot War occurs in Connecticut between members of the Pequot tribe and English settlers

South America

During this time period, the Spanish are beginning to colonize the area bringing with them African workers to work on projects such as universities and Spanish preachers to spread their beliefs through missions.

1550: African slaves arrive in Brazil
1551: University of Mexico is founded
1576: Small pox outbreak
1605: Due to disease the population of Mexico has declined from 25 million to 1 million
1610: First Jesuit missions among the Guaraní in Paraguay

Australia

During this period, not much is happening that is being recorded. The finding and mapping of the area take place but nothing much beyond that.

1606: Dutchman Willem Janszoon and his crew are first to meet Australian natives
1642: Australia is mapped out by Abel Tasman

Africa

Through the slave trade, varying amounts of early colnialism, and other domestic matters, Africa was a madhouse for cultural diffusion and erratic behaviors of countries.

1550: Portugeese trade in Africa attracts Europeans
1551: Turks capture Tripoli
1562: England joins slave trade
1564: Songhai empire destroys Mali empire
1575: Portugeese settle Angola
1581-1591: Moroccans expand across Sahara, capture, Timbuktu, and destroy the Songhai empire
1650: Dutch establish colony in Cape of Good Hope

Asia

During this period different things like religions and trade were rejected from most of Asia, keeping religions like Christianity to a minimum

1500-1650: Islamic and Christianity grows through the spread of texts and movements
1600: William Adams becomes the first Englishman to visit Japan
1600: The 6 hour battle of Sekigahara takes place
1606: Anti Christ decrees are proclaimed throughout Asia
1610: Christian missionaries expelled from Japan
1614: Shogun Ieyasu prohibits Cristian activity

The Rest of Europe

Unlike many of the other countries on this list, Europe had been already developed and was still growing, with different influences going all across the world.

1550: Chocolate is introduced
1550: Jews are expelled from Genoa, Italy
1563: Outbreak of The Black Plague
1611: King James Version of The Bible is published
