Beautiful and Ugly By: Kenzie Gripentrog

I chose the binary opposite of beautiful and ugly. People have their own meanings of what these definitions mean. People have different opinions about what is beautiful and ugly. It is all an individual’s perception, whether or not they see more of the beauty or the ugly in things. Someone who looks pleasing to your eyes, may not look pleasing to others.

Beautiful is defined by dictionary.com as possessing qualities that give great pleasure or satisfaction to see, hear, think about, etc.; delighting the senses or mind. Everyone has their own definition on what beautiful means and what It means to them.

Ugly is defined by dictionary.com as very unattractive or unpleasant to look at; offensive to the sense of beauty; displeasing in appearance. People nowadays don’t have a filter anymore, especially with social media so they will state their opinion on what is ugly or beautiful.

Social media impacts how people look at beautiful and ugly. People think that they have to be this person to be beautiful. For example, a model. Everyone wants to look like a model. People photo-shop to make themselves look better. They feel if you don’t look a certain way then they view themselves as being “ugly”. Women and men’s images are being photo-shopped to unachievable standard.

One movie that represents beautiful and ugly would be The Grinch Stole Christmas. I chose this because the Grinch’s heart was ugly. He hated Christmas until Cindy Lou Who changed his heart about Christmas.

Another classic movie is Beauty and The Beast. This demonstrates how a person’s look doesn’t show who they truly are. People were scared and threatened by the beast because of how he looked. Overtime, the beast started to act how people treated him because of how he looked. But then Belle wasn’t threatened by his looks and got to truly know him.

The standard in America for beauty is that woman have to be slim and wear a lot of make up to be considered beautiful. In other cultures, woman are considered beautiful if they more curves. Nowadays, women won’t go outside of their house or go in public with others without wearing make up.

A common idiom is “Beauty is only skin deep.” In our society, there is a movement towards being more accepting about different body types. For example, Target. Target is promoting beauty in women in all shapes and sizes. There swimsuit ad features woman in different sizes, shapes, and cultures. There ads aren’t being photo-shopped showing women’s stretch marks and cellulite. Also, celebrities posting on social media pictures of themselves showing their cellulite, stretch marks, photos of them not wearing make up.
