Hello, and welcome to my first software animation assignment.
If you don't want to see my entire research, w.i.ps/proces etc. On this spark page I have all the end results from assignments from school and outside. With a quick explanation on the how, when, etc.
This spark page will go to another page with only my own projects and creations. With also a quick explanation on the how, when, etc.
Practices
Train
Requirements
- You have 4 hours
- You'll only work with the basic forms.
- You'll make a train
- You have to make your cube in the next format: 32 mm * 32 mm * 18 mm, this is so you can easily calculate the rest
- You can use the example one, but if you want to make another train that's fine too, just put them in the right format.
For this, we'd also use Cinema4D. In software animation we'd mostly explore tools such as 'poly modeling'. For each tool we got a small project, a train as first from Duplo. We got 4 hours for this (we have classes that are 1 hour, so we had only that day). We had an example to look at (or u looked one for one on the internet).
So, you had 4 hours to make this train (the boy, dog and number 10 weren't necessary). We had a break in between 2 hours.
Here's my train right before the break of 30 mins.
It was a lot of fun making the train that as soon as they opened the doors again I almost ran back to my place to continue, not because I had a lot more to do, just because I was having so much fun working in Cinema4D.
We had 2 hours left, In that I also made a few more attachments such as the numbers, open windows, a background, maybe a small story in the picture. Because that was the assignment, make a picture, not an animation.
Airplane
Requirements:
- You'll start with just a few segments, later on you'll use more.
- You can use the train example, but your own of internet is appreciated.
The week after, we had an new assignment with a new tool. Poly modeling. I didn't understand what it meant at first, but after seeing the teacher do it on his youtube I got an idea on what it meant. In this assignment we had once again 4 hours time to make a airplane by using poly modeling.
I didn't, unfortunately, make w.i.ps for the plane. I do have the youtube of my teacher explaining what poly modeling is.
Teacher making a live youtube video again about poly modeling a plane, in Dutch.
For this assignment you could once again use the example, what I didn't use, or one yourself on the internet
So after the youtube video, we had to make our own plane. And down here is the result of mine, with an nice background.
Tin can
Requirements:
- We'll make a coffee can, but you're free to make your own design. You have the textures of the coffee can in the spark page.
- You NEED to have the can finished before the next week's animation class, because we'll use it there too.
Now we had the assignment that you might've read in my other spark page, 3D hagelslag. There I explained that I had to make a tin can for Software Animation. I'll explain it now too, maybe a bit different and maybe better.
We had to make a tin can so we knew how poly modeling would work in a round object. We also needed in the next animation class (3D hagelslag the gift & mirror assignment). Our teacher made a 2 part live youtube video.
The first part, in Dutch.
And the second part, also in Dutch.
Below is my tin can finished.
Our own texture + (Motion) Poster
Requirements:
- You now have to make your own texture, no longer the coffee one.
- You'll then also have to question, how will I put this on the screen? Where will I place my object? Where will be the camera? And where the lights?
- You'll make a poster out of Photoshop and with help of InDesign a good font.
In our software class we had to make our own, new, package, and make a poster of the tin can in that package.
For my ideas I used Photoshop.
After I thought of a cool name, Ligr. I wanted to add colors. Since I already have an idea on the what. I only needed to add the how.
And so I made the colors, that can be seen in lighting. It isn't final yet because I'm not yet sure if I want those colors, or just one.
I first made the backside, because that'd be the easiest of them all. I made the lightning by downloading a brush of the internet. This brush would then be added on Photoshop.
After that I made of course the front. In the front I made an oval. I made that so I know where my text will be placed.
In the next picture you'll see the text in the oval.
After that I made my package stand next to each other, as if it's rolled out of the can.
This was my first design, only problem was that Cinema4D didn't make the fake text on the can because then Ligr, feel the thunder would be to high.
So I made my fake text go higher and that worked better.
And now the pictures of my can with it's package
Now I only needed to make a poster. I'll be honest, it's the end of the school year, and you had to make already a lot of posters throughout the year. You're very tired of doing them.
So I came up with the idea, why not make a motion poster with lightning, since... I have lightning.
So I'd make a motion poster with these 3 pictures to make lightning. Below is the youtube video from the end result
I also have a gif of this video. Unfortunately Youtube doesn't 'know' .gif files.
Final assignment
Requirements:
- Keep it simple
- Try to get a hang on the modeling
- Use a path for your object to make it only go on that, kind of like a loop.
- There has to be life, not something only with a few camera views.
For our final assignment of Software Animation, we had to make our own world. It had to be a simple design and with our learned tools.
I first made a storyboard, you can see it here below.
After this I went behind the computer and start making it in Cinema4D.
I only have any w.i.p more at the end of my world.
After everybody called it a princess world I used the name and made it even more... Barbie-like?
Anyway here's the end result of my world.
I had to make it a living world as the project asks from me. So I started making a car.
Here's a w.i.p on me making a car, with the reference next to it.
And another w.i.p on it's wheel.
End result car.
After the cars (copy pasted) I made a race track for them. So it'd be Princesses that enjoyed watching race cars. Fun right?
The week after we got another short lesson on motion, how you could make your object coupled on a path so I'd only move on that the whole time.
Here's the video of my teacher showing/explaining it on his youtube account, in Dutch
After this I used the path for my cars on the race track.
This sounds weird but for some reason if you add in all pictures of the teachers working in animation, it'll be appreciated. It could also give you about 0,5+ points on your grade.
In the video above is my world finished. I'll only need to add some sound effects and a song.
Finished
And then here it is. My finished story. In the story it's just a normal day. Only an alien plane steels the crown/crystal of the kingdom. Everybody is shocked about this.
Other stuff that might be important:
- I had 4 hours on the train
- I had 4 hours on the plane
- I had 4 hours on the tin can
- I had 5 weeks on my end project, 20 hours.
- We had to use our tools that we learned in class.
- Keep it simple so the rendering doesn't take forever.

This spark page will be closed in the months February till the end of May/after May break. This is because the students will then get their first look at software animation. And it will stay open for the rest of the year.
