Note from our Head
Dear Oakfield families,
It has been an incredibly stimulating week at Oakfield, perhaps even more than normal, as we held a virtual workshop with former child-soldier Emmanuel Jal talking to our Year 5 and 6 pupils about how he overcame seemingly impossible life challenges, as well as the power of following your dreams and making a positive difference in the world. The children were highly engaged through their discussion of the refugee crisis and are conscious that even if it is not much in the news at the moment it is still an ongoing global issue.
Slightly closer to home we enjoyed Clean Air Day on Thursday and thank you to the Clean Air for Oakfield Group for leading the charge on this. Well done to all the families who put into practice some of the suggestions for getting to school in an environmentally friendly way, particularly those who cycled to school for the first time. We should all be mindful to keep the momentum up and I know there are many more initiatives planned in this area.
Finally, we hope many of you took advantage of Thursday's online session with Mr Roye and our technology partners London CLC to learn about the evolving computing curriculum and gained a deeper understanding of how to stay safe online.
Thank you to the staff and families who organised, supported or just took part in these initiatives. A huge amount of Care, Curiosity and Collaboration on show illustrating it isn't just down to the children to demonstrate our 6 Cs!
Wishing you all wonderful weekends.

YEAR 6: OAKFIELD DIPLOMA
We are sharing lots of things about the Oakfield Diploma on our social media platforms - especially Twitter and Instagram - that aren't on the newsletter. So get following us!
And Year 6 parents and carers can tag us @OakfieldPrep and use the hashtag #OakfieldDiploma2021 to show how their children have been engaging with the subjects and activities which are part of the Diploma.
This week we had 3 more excellent talks from different speakers to offer insight into their professions - the children asked some brilliant questions and thank you to the speakers for giving up their time.
Dr Jason Sarfo-Annin - GP and Public Health Doctor
Shaun Coltress - Station Commander, London Fire Brigade
Angela Cullen, Senior Software Engineer at Paddle
The Year 6 Photography Diploma class have taken snap shots to another level again this week thanks mostly to the guest speaker who joined us for last week's class. Mr Surey, our school business administrator, is a keen professional photographer when he's not here at Oakfield and was kind enough to come and talk to our Year 6 class. Mr Surey shared some recognised rules of photography including, leading lines, the use of triangles, the rule of thirds and the golden ratio. After a brief recap on all of these rules, Year 6 set off around school to capture that illusive special shot. Do you recognise our school from this perspective?
REFUGEE WEEK
During our Art lesson this week children in Years 3,4 5 and 6 thought about what it means to be a refugee.
Our big question was: ‘What are refugees leaving and what is it they hope to find?’
And our answer:
We think refugees are safety seekers, people who need to find somewhere that is safe, peaceful and kind. Somewhere they will feel accepted, listened to and cared for. We recognise that this is something everyone needs, deserves and has the right to expect.
Each class made a book to share their own places of refuge; that refuge might be a place or it could be a person, animal or object that helps us feel safe. Once made, the books have been used in class circle times and the children have been able to talk about what they have drawn.
In our "Votes for Schools" lesson this week, we discussed the topic "whether the refugee crisis is over?"
We discussed what is meant by a crisis and the majority of year 6 pupils felt that the crisis was not over.
"There are still wars going on and people are still having to leave their country" Luke
"The numbers have reduced, but there are still hundreds of thousands of people risking their lives to get to a place of refugee" Lochy
Year 6 came up with their own reflections and advice about how to live your life in positive way, based on the talk we received from Emmanuel Jal:
We need to be positive to ourselves and we must think about what we need to do now!
You have to keep on going and if you stop, you can stop permanently
If you want something you have to believe that you can do it.
You are on this world for a reason to do something good.
If someone is mean to you, say 10 nice things to yourself.
Do not let others decide what you have to do.
Be part of the solution
YEAR 3
Year 3 learned about the story of Boudicca’s rebellion and destruction of Colchester, St Albans and London. We role played different characters involved in the story and thought about how they might think and feel in each scenario.
YEAR 2
Year 2 had such a wonderful morning of exploring capacity. We got to be outside in the lovely sunshine. We have been looking at volume and milliliters together in Maths. It was so much fun to see how the measuring cylinders fill all the way to the line. We worked hard to just find 100ml and then increased from there.
Year 1
UPPER FOUNDATION
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week we have read the traditional Irish tale of Finn McCool and Benandonner. We thought about all of the different villains we have encountered so far in our topic and discussed if Benandonner was a villain. We enjoyed making wanted posters and loved looking at The Giant’s Causeway on Google Earth!
We were lucky enough to have a visit from London CLC who introduced the children to lots of different fun, interactive ICT equipment. We also loved getting outside in the sunshine this week and planting pumpkins with Mr. Bower.
We had the most fantastic visit from Perform for a workshop themed ‘Under the Sea’. This will inspire our literacy learning next week as we begin thinking about action words. We will be reading some of the traditional Hawaiian stories about Maui’s adventures with his hook!
We would like to wish everyone a Happy Fathers’ Day for Sunday!
Reminders:
- Monday 28th June: Video message from new teachers

Chalk Challenge
Prep children have been celebrating our 6C's in a brand-new way this half term with the introduction of the Chalk Challenge!
Each week a new challenge is set, last week it was 'Gardens' and this week it's 'Robot World'. During their 'bubble playtimes', children across the different year groups work together to create their design. There is a board for each house, Ruskin, Webster, Pearsall and Baird and a score board on which daily scores are displayed.
Obviously, Care, Challenge and Creativity are exercised during the chalk challenge but there is a lot of Collaboration needed if you are to really succeed.
Congratulations to Ruskin who won the 'Garden' Chalk Challenge with a massive score of 41 house points....we can't wait to see which house is the champion this week.

We're sure you will be wowed by their creativity and skill. So please go ahead and indulge in a sugary feast with your eyes!
