May 2022 Mother Margaret Mary Catholic High School

Let Us Pray

Hail Mary,

Full of Grace,

The Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou among women,

and blessed is the fruit

of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary,

Mother of God,

pray for us sinners now,

and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Principal's Message

We are nearing the final stretch of the school year. For the first time, many of our students will be writing a final high school or diploma exam. Our staff will be assisting them with preparation for exams. Many students have resumed participation in activities outside of school. Many students have also taken on employment. We encourage you to help your students to create schedules to assist them with managing their time and make their school work a priority.

Our school continues to grow. We are anticipating close to 800 students for the 2022-2023 school year. We are excited to host the largest student group in MMM history. This will not come without challenges. Class sizes will remain the same, but you may notice more congestion around the school.

I would like to invite all parents to an evening presentation by Yara Kodershah on May 19 at 7:00pm at the school. This event is being sponsored by the MMM School Council. Yara has been working with our staff in the area of EDIAR (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism). Yara brings a wealth of experience having worked with many organization throughout the country. Her presentation will provide you a background on EDIAR and the work being done in our community.

We are excited to invite our families and students to join us on the evening of May 25th for food and festivities as we are now able to showcase the great work our students are doing in the Arts and CTS programs at MMM. All families are welcome as it will be an opportunity to meet our staff.

Mystery Solved

On behalf of everyone involved in Clue, cast, crew and staff, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of those who supported our production. The reception of live theatre after such a long break was truly appreciated. We would also like to personally acknowledge all students and their families for the long hours and hard work that went into making this a wonderful experience. Our students are truly talented and gifted artists, being able to showcase this is a privilege.

Improv

May 11th, our Improv Team is performing in the Northern Alberta Improv League finals. Stay tuned for more information about the venue and format of the finals. Currently, Rapid Fire Theatre is asking schools about the possibility of a return to in person improv for the finals. More information to come, keep your eyes on our Instagram page for updates.

EDIAR

Equity Diversity Inclusion Anti-Racism

A presentation for the MMM Community

May 19 - 7:00pm - 8:30pm

We believe that each person is created in the image and likeness of God and in the goodness, dignity and worth of each person. We honour the dignity in each person by treating one another with empathy, compassion, and respect. Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism are guiding values consistent with Catholic Social Teaching, reaffirming dignity at every level.

The MMM school council invites you to attend an engaging and thought provoking session presented by Yara Kodershah. Yara will outline what EDIAR is and the important work being done in our world through the lens of EDIAR. Yara has been consulting with our staff throughout the school year as we continue to move forward as a school and staff in our understanding of EDIAR and its place in education. We encourage MMM families to join us in person in the school learning commons. We are also looking forward to Yara being able to connect with the staff and students in our school during our professional development day on May 20.

Ways to Support your Child In Social Studies and English Classes!

As we enter into the month of May and the second half of our semester, we find our students starting to feel the strain of being back in the rigor of High School. As we near our Summer Break, it is a great opportunity to re-set, take a moment to reflect on student success, and set some strategies to tackle the rest of the academic semester.

The Social Studies and English Department have some ways to help support student learning and skills at home. Since the pandemic shifted the way students learn, we are now finding that some key areas of knowledge, practice and study skills are in need of extra support. Although we facilitate the learning of these in our classroom, there are still ways students may be supported at home. In addition, there are tools available in class and digitally on the Google Classroom of each teacher that can, and should, support students in their learning.

We strongly encourage parents and guardians to review the Program of Studies for each course. Although there are many layers to these programs, it helps establish the foundations for each level and subject, how students are assessed, and what skills are important for student success based on their ability.

MMM students will be challenged to create change within our world by making it a better place to be. During the day students will hear messages from guest speakers who have made the decision to positively impact their greater communities through the work they do. Following our speakers, students will engage in Changemaking projects. These will include everything from direct service to advocacy projects. Chief Superintendent's Message

In our Catholic faith, Mary, the Mother of God, plays a central role for us. Through her “yes” to God, salvation was born into this world in the person of Jesus. We begin our calendar year with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, and have many other special days to honour her.
