Dirty KILN TRAIL RACES Course Description: Counter-Clockwise (Odd Years)

----

SECTION 1: HORSE TRAILS

Both 10K and Half-Marathon

The half-marathon starts at 9:00am while the 10K start at 9:15am.

Runners will start at the ball field near Pavilion #2 in a long mass start before heading toward the horse trails in a small wooded corner of the park. Already the mud will begin to fly!

The Confluence Stream Crossing

The creek crossing may be deep and can be anywhere from ankle to waist deep depending on recent rains!
Note: Some years, due to high-water, we may detour runners to the spillway.)

Runners will climb a small yet sloppy hill and make a left toward the spillway.

THE ROLLER COASTER

The trail hugs the shoreline with lots of rolly-polly up and downs. As you get closer to the spillway, the trail will flatten yet will get muddier until you make it near the breast of the dam.

After the breast of the dam, make a sharp left and there will be a stretch of mud and ankle grabbing roots. Again at the lake, the trail parallels above the lake to the mooring area.

-------

FISHERMAN'S TRAIL

Be careful of the bridges because the mud tracked onto them will make them slippery.

Make sure you tie your shoes! After around some ponds, there is a muddy section through the low lands of the park along the creek.

MOORE'S HILL

Elevation climbing time! Starting from the remains of an industrial center, the climb up Moore's Hill at the northeast side of the park. The trail is a singletrack that climbs 300 feet in a half mile.

Get ready for a fast downhill on the west side of Moore's Hill.

Fast and flat-ish running is in store at the bottom of Moore's Hill and around its base.

The Limestone Kilns

But before the finish, we will zig zag you past a quarry, a slight uphill grade on the edge of Smith Hillside and down to a field near the amphitheater for more zags and zigs until rising up to the finish line.

If you are doing the short race, you are done! Treat yourself to some food at the pavilion.

-------

MORE HORSING AROUND

Runners will repeat the section from the start to the the base of Moore's Hill.

This includes the Confluence Stream Crossing.

Around Sugarloaf Hill

and up and down the Roller Coaster

Of course, don't forget Fisherman's Path and the Canoe Creek Crossing!

Moore's Hill (Redux)

After the crossing, the changes from the previous loop begin. Runners will go up and down Moore's Hill via an alternate loop.

While the short course climbs Moore's Hill once, the long course climbs up it three additional times, yo-yoing up and down until the final summit. There will be a view of Scotch Valley in front of you, and the protected bat caves on your left.

Weeeeeeeee! It is a downhill to the Limestone Kilms.

-------

Smith Hillside

This singletrack to the top of Smith Hillside Trail which snakes you up the hill. It is a nice climb with mixed pine and deciduous forest to the top of the hill. The trail crowns the hill and makes a slight descent before traveling along the side of the hill toward the finish.

The trail is narrow and extremely slippery when wet – especially on the downhill!

Finally, it is a sprint to the finish!

YOU ARE DONE! Congrats on finishing the dirty kiln!
