Joe Stinchcomb mixing a cocktail at Saint Leo Lounge

Logline: How a Mississippi cocktail menu shook up a small town by honoring three black bartenders during Black History Month.

On February 1, 2018, Saint Leo, an Italian-inspired restaurant in Oxford, Mississippi, introduced a new cocktail menu that boldly read “BLACK HISTORY MONTH COCKTAILS”. This new menu, specially crafted by Saint Leo’s head bartender and beverage director, Joe Stinchcomb, included five new cocktails, each with names referencing the storied past of Blacks in America. One of the drinks Stinchcomb created was a Negroni, which combined the usual Campari and red vermouth with a taste of paradise grain infused gin; he aptly named the drink "(I’m Not Your) Negroni". Approximately a week later, a white patron of the restaurant took to Instagram to praise the new menu, but not everyone approved of the menu’s racial tone. In the end, Stinchcomb's assortment of cocktails did what all good art does: It unsettled people. And in a community that would rather leave discussions of race in the past, it opened the door to a much larger discussion, which was an extraordinary and necessary thing.

Intent:

This documentary will blend traditional documentary structure with ultra short form narrative conventions in an attempt to share black history through the art of bartending in Oxford, Mississippi.

Audience:

Restaurants, bars, distilleries, historians, as well as people who are interested in the history of cocktails and curious about the art of bartending. By taking a multi-platform approach, this production aims to make the content as accessible as possible to new media enthusiasts as well as an audience looking for a more traditional arts documentary.

Structure:

This project is pursuing a multi-platform model. The documentary content will be released in two-forms. The short form, 30 minute version will focus on Joe Stinchcomb and the backlash of his cocktail, (I’m Not Your) Negroni. This content will be submitted for festival considerations. The long form feature will add a more in depth look into Joe's life journey. This final version will be submitted to Amazon and PBS.

Approach:

This documentary project is intended to be a multi-model feature to provide maximum opportunities for digital content and festivals. This project is structured to allow the content to be flexible in terms of distribution and take advantage of the existing funding structure for documentaries.
