February already! A massive thank you for supporting school throughout yet another trying time. The pandemic is still very much around and we have managed to stay open and still run trips etc. Your children's attendance has also remained close to target throughout - thank you.
It has already been a very busy month throughout January and your children have been involved in a range of activities and exciting learning.
Read on to see what your children have been up to this term and what fantastic and exciting learning opportunities they have been a part of.
Mrs Trickett - Head of school
As you are aware, new measures are constantly being updated. We are still living in uncertain times and we thank you for your continued support with maintaining safety measures and following our risk assessment. We need to ensure our pupils, families and staff are kept safe at all times. If you would like to see the risk assessment, you can view via our website here:
As ever, we are always available if you need any assitance or advice, please call on 01226710329 or email MFPS.parents@hcacademytrust.education Thanks.
Pupils' love of reading continues to be developed across school. We asked your children who their favourite authors were and a range of books written by these have been purchased for our library. A school system which keeps track of all books loaned is due to be set up soon. Look out for more infomation...
Can we ask that all pupils continue to read regularly at home and swap their books in our library? We would really appreciate you looking around the house for any books with our school stamp in and returning as soon as possible.
Dont forget, we have been selected as a charity to vote for in our local Tesco store at Hemsworth. From January, use your blue tokens every time you shop and vote for the Milefield reading scheme at the voting point. The more people who vote, the more money we get for even more books!
Due to many various illnesses this term, our attendance figures have fluctuated but we are confident these will rise again to above our target of 97%. Please call school for advice, support or with any questions if your child is ill at home. We still need to remain vigilant in relation to COVID-19 and measures in place. See below for figures this term:
Autumn term 1: 96%
Autumn term 2: 94.9%
Spring term:
Week 1: 95.3%
Week 2: 95.2%
Week 3: 95.3%
Week 4: 93.2%
Our target is 97%. I know we can do better from February 2022!
EYFS
This month has been fun-packed and full of exciting learning opportunities...
F1 - Nursery
F2
So far this year, F2 have received a breaking news report regarding a fallen star that had landed in their outside area! We worked together as a team to get the star back into the sky where it truly belongs, using our phonics skills to write the ingredients for the potions and our knowledge of size, weight and capacity to make sure that the magic potion was made correctly. We have done such a good job that we have received a special invitation inviting us to join Space School - an Academy for Young Aspiring Astronauts! In space school, we will be participating in an immersive space experience to test our astronaut skills. Will you pass the test and become the next astronaut to travel to space?
Don't forget to join Miss Halford and Mrs Critchley for the Storytime club every Tuesday 3.15-4pm. So far we have created some puppet masterpieces to retell our own stories. Who will be the hero of your story? Come and share your ideas with us and bring your story to life by creating puppets and props!
KS1
Class 1
In year one, Mrs Burnett's class have been up to lots of amazing things. Take a look at our pic collages below...
We have enjoyed the story of Handa's surprise. We have made story maps and wrote our own versions of the story in literacy, we tasted some of the delicious fruits from the story in our science lessons as we are learning about our 5 series. In maths we have been problem solving and counting in 2's, 5's and 10's.
In RSHE we are learning about lots of different feelings that we may experience and in art we are looking at the work of George Seurat. We are exploring different techniques and have experimented with using the technique of pointillism and are progressing onto making art using lines. I'm looking forward to meeting parents and carers on Monday 14th February where you will get chance to have a look at some of the great learning we have been doing.
In RE we are learning about special times for different religions and how they are celebrated. In PE we are focusing on gymnastics and exploring how to use apparatus safely and with control.
Class 1/2
Here are some examples of our fantastic learning in class 1/2...
Class 2
In class 2, we have been taking part in a range of exciting learning opportunities...
Art - Out topic for Art this half term is Sculpture. We have been experimenting with using clay to create different shapes, patterns, and models from observation. As part of our learning, we also went on an exciting trip to The Yorkshire Sculpture park, whereby we saw lots of real life sculptures and took part in a sculpture workshop to learn more about the Art of Sculpture. Next, we will be using the skills we have gathered to design and make our very own sculptures and showcase these at our very own 'Milefield's Mini Sculpture Park'.
Science- In Science we have been learning all about Materials and their uses. We have investigated materials and described their properties, and considered which materials would be the best to make different objects based on these properties. Next, we will be continuing to investigate a range of materials to see how these can be changed.
RE - In RE our current focus question is 'Why are some times special?' we have been looking at different special times within different religions and learning more about why these are special to people.
PE - In PE our focus is Gymnastics. We have performed different shapes, balances and jumps with our bodies. Next, we will be applying all of our new skills to our own performances.
PD & RSHE - In PD and RSE our focus is Mental Health and Well-Being. We have been focusing on identifying different emotions, how to deal with these and who to speak to if we feel worried or not good. We will continuing this learning in our upcoming Children's Mental Health Week.
LKS2
Class 3
We really kicked the New Year off well in Year 3 and have been extremely busy with our learning.
In literacy we were given a plane ticket with a missing destination. We thought about where we would like to go, our hopes and dreams. We read the book Tar Beach and created some wonderful descriptions of the city of New York and of tropical beaches. We were extremely clever to merge these two descriptions together to form the setting of our stories. We have just finished our write ups and are excited about our new book The Tin Forest.
In Maths, we have been working on our number, place value, addition, and subtraction skills. Miss Gillespie is very impressed with how much we have come on with our learning and our more positive attitudes to maths. We are continuing to practice our times tables and are enjoying seeing our scores improving each week. Over the next few weeks we will be looking at multiplication and division, fractions, and measure including time.
In science we have started our topic on light. We looked at light sources and how some things make natural light. We know that darkness is the absence of light and had a mini disco with glow sticks. We know about the sun and how to protect our eyes from UV rays and are moving on to look at shadows and reflections in the next few weeks.
Our gymnastic skills are improving. We started looking at making different shapes with our bodies, and have moved on to work on our jumping skills. We are looking forward to building these ideas into a sequence, and maybe using apparatus in the coming weeks.
Our topic this half term is art. We are studying the work of Pablo Picasso. We have enjoyed looking at his work and have been working on our drawing skills. In the next few weeks, we will study the concept of painting and apply our ideas to create a final piece which we will enter in an art competition for lower keystage 2.
We are enjoying looking at why some times are special in RE. We looked at Harvest, Easter and Christmas for Christians. We have learnt about the Purim festival for the Jewish faith and at Muslim weddings. We are looking forward to learning about special times for Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs too in the next few weeks.
In RSHE we are looking at healthy bodies and healthy minds and mental health.
Class 3/4
Class 4
UKS2
Class 5
5/6
Children mixing tints, shades and tones in first few pictures and then last week they were using their tints, shades and tones of green to paint leaves and foliage, which will eventually lead into a Henri Rousseau inspired painting.
We've still got to create our moodboard of inspiration and paint our final piece using acrylic and watercolour paints, which will be printed on a tea towel or tote bag!
In literacy, we've got to finish writing our short adventure stories about the jungle. We are making these into books with a jungle front cover, which we will paint in art, and a blurb. We are also reading some more of Journey to the River Sea which we love.
This term, all points have been reset and all houses will be asked to go above and beyond to keep earning those points and get to the top of the leaderboard. Don't forget to ask your child(ren) daily how many house points they've earnt for their team! The leaderboard is posted weekly via Twitter @MilefieldP
