Children's Beach House April 2022 Newsletter (scroll down to view)

Dear Friends of Children’s Beach House,

One of the hallmarks of quality youth programs is the capacity to create a sense of safety for participants. At Children’s Beach House, we take this effort quite seriously because it’s such a foundational key to success for kids.

When a child feels safe, he or she is able to take the risks necessary to be in relationships. Within these relationships, kids gain confidence as they sharpen their communication, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills. This new-found confidence prods them to try new things. And, as they keep trying, they are learning!

Simply put, feeling safe makes learning possible. Research has shown that children who feel secure play and explore more. They have less difficulty with peer relationships. By helping children feel safe, we prepare children to learn -- not just now, but well into the future.

Creating spaces where children and youth can feel physically and emotionally safe is one of the most important things Children’s Beach House does to promote positive youth development among the children and youth we serve.

We are so grateful to our supporters for making that possible.

Sincerely,

Richard T. Garrett, Executive Director

Welcome Jacqueline Donaldson, CBH’s New Youth Development Program Director

Jackie Donaldson sincerely believes “everyone should have the opportunity to live a happy and fulfilled life.”

And, for as long as she can remember, she has wanted to help people realize that goal. This ambition developed naturally as Jackie benefitted from the caring interest of others when she was a child herself. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Jackie had access to a range of mentoring programs as a child. She participated in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and attended summer enrichment camps. It was somewhat inevitable, then, that Jackie would pursue a degree in psychology at City University of New York, York College.

Jackie put that degree to work at The New York Foundling, a pillar in the network of social services in New York City since 1869. The New York Foundling’s philosophy mirrors that of Children’s Beach House. It trusts “in the power and potential of people,” and “deliberately invests in proven practices.” At The New York Foundling, Jackie worked as a case worker and family interventionist, providing therapy and support to families to reduce risks at home.

She was selected by the organization’s executive director to work with the Pinkerton Foundation and State of NY to help create a youth work readiness program.

Jackie worked at the New York Foundling for more than four years before relocating to Delaware. Upon arriving in her new home, Jackie threw herself into the work of helping young people at the State of Delaware’s Division of Prevention & Behavioral Health Services where she worked as a Program Administrator.

As Director of CBH’s Youth Development Program (YDP), Jackie is putting her training, experience, and desire to help people live happy and fulfilled lives to work. Her primary responsibility is to oversee the Youth Development Program and the cadre of Family Engagement Coordinators across the state of Delaware. She is responsible for making sure the program adheres to the Positive Youth Development model, which helps young people identify and cultivate their innate skills and talents.

When not at work, Jackie and her husband are busy helping their own two children identify and cultivate their own innate gifts. She especially likes to do that by spending time with her family out in nature or as they prepare and enjoy meals together at home.

All of us here at CBH are delighted to welcome Jackie to the team.

Lunch With A Purpose

A monthly gathering of women that benefits a Sussex County charity.

Lunch With A Purpose elected Children's Beach House to be the beneficiary for their monthly event in March! Each month, the group gathers at a different venue for lunch and a good time to support a local non-profit in Sussex County. At the venue, participants bring an item or two (or more!) that the benefiting organization has requested, as well as bringing items for the Food Bank Of Delaware.

The generosity of nearly 300 participants filled an entire truck with donated items from a list of things that the programs of Children's Beach House need on a regular basis. Paper towels, baby wipes, disinfectant, art supplies, sheets, blankets, laundry detergent, and so much more! Once we organized and took inventory of all of these gifts, we estimated the value to be over $5,500!

In addition to the items donated by the participants, the real excitement of the event is the raffle! The raffle items were donated by local businesses and friends of CBH and included lots of gift cards to restaurants, wine baskets, experiences, vouchers for services like power washing and landscaping, a Schwinn bicycle, and even a 60" HDTV! The raffle ticket sales totaled almost $6,000! What a spectacular event!

To attend one of the monthly Lunch With A Purpose events, send your contact information to lwpcoastalde@gmail.com. Seating is limited at each venue and tickets to the event sell out FAST so keep an eye out for the email invitation!

The Charity Golf Event is Back in Full Swing!

One of CBH’s most enduring fundraisers, the annual Charity Golf Event, will take place on Monday, May 23, 2022 at The Peninsula on the Indian River Bay. Started by CBH trustee T. Rowland Marshall (who is the father of current CBH trustees, Constance Marshall Miller and Linda Fischer), the annual Charity Golf Event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support CBH programs for children and families across the state of Delaware.

Under the care and leadership of CBH trustees Ellison Carey and Bernadette Polinski since 2009, the event has grown steadily and now hosts up to 128 players from Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland at the Peninsula’s private Jack Nicklaus Signature course. Many golfers have played every year since the event began. While the cause and the course give ample reason to make CBH’s annual charity golf fundraiser a fun and memorable event that inspires such dedication, Ellison and Bernie are building a number of other fun and tasty elements into the day that give additional reasons for people to return year after year. These include golfer prizes, golden tickets (two Mulligans, various on-course contests), boxed lunches, bloody Mary and orange crush station, silent auction, and an evening dinner at the Peninsula’s beautiful clubhouse.

Conversations surrounding diversity are often dreaded and avoided at all costs in the workplace. Respectively, courageous conversations are fundamental in empowering people to acknowledge the elephant in the room. These conversations are essential in aiding diverse teams to dauntlessly partake in equitable practices, which cultivates a sense of belonging, while disseminating a message of inclusivity. This workshop will explore facilitation tips and tools that any organization can use to set the foundation for DEIAB work.
