Curriculum for Wales Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd

Welcome to Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd's Curriculum for Wales summary.

A Creative Curriculum

A Contemporary Curriculum

A Captivating Curriculum

So, what exactly is the new curriculum?

The Curriculum for Wales guidance aims to help each school develop its own curriculum, enabling its learners to develop towards the four purposes of the curriculum – the starting point and aspiration for every child and young person in Wales.

The 4 Purposes

Ambitious, Capable Learners

This means that our learners believe in themselves and what they are capable of. They want to learn and do better. They have the skills to learn.

Enterprising, Creative Contributors

This means that our learners can be creative and come up with new ideas. They can problem solve. They can use this in their work.

Ethical, Informed Citizens

This means that our learners understand their rights and responsibilities. They get involved in their community. They look after the world.

Healthy, Confident Individuals

This means that our learners have a healthy mind and body. They feel good about themselves and about what they believe.

The 6 Areas of Learning and Experience

At Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd, the above 4 Purposes are an integral part of our daily lessons and activities. Our curriculum provides countless learning opportunities and experiences through the 6 Areas of Learning and Experiences, which are:

The beginning...

Gathering the ideas of all school stakeholders

To coincide with the Curriculum for Wales, it was decided to create a new logo that coupled the old, with the new. As 'Aim High' is Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd's current motto, we thought best to play with this idea and a brand new kite was created using symbols, pictures and a few emoji. Would you like to see it...

The 4 Purposes are a solid foundation for our children's education. The 6 Areas of Learning and Experience demonstrate and use the cross-curricular skills of our learners and ignite independence throughout their educational pathway. Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Skills are an integral part of our curriculum. And obviously, the Welsh language and ethos is naturally embedded into everything we do here, at Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd.

Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd's Curriculum

Below is our new curriculum that will guide the journey of our learners.

Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd creates and delivers a creative, complete and dynamic curriculum that inspires, ignites and excites all learners. Central to the school family will be fostering a sense of identity and pride in our language and heritage in a passionate way.

Rich Tasks

What exactly is a rich task? Well, it's a project that couples all of the areas of learning and experience, the 4 purposes and EVERYTHING else! It uses each child's creative skills and aims towards an end product or special event at the end of the journey. We've been doing these for many years and we feel they're a fantastic way to bring teaching and learning to life. Let's take a look at the rich tasks of the past...

Pop-up Restaurant

Research, plan, prepare, create and administer a three-course (5 star!) meal to stakeholders of the school. What a treat!

Oscars Night

The red carpet has never looked so good! An opportunity to use the learners' performing and presenting talent and much more.

Fashion Show

Cheese!! We used the expertise of our children, staff and stakeholders to design and create a skirt, waistcoat or purse for display at our fashion show launch night!

HAPUS A HEINI

Have you heard of Joe Wicks? Well, here's the Welsh version! Research, plan and create a WELSH fitness DVD and host a 'Hapus a Heini' evening for the whole community. There were also delicious flapjacks and healthy smoothies!

Survival Night

A fun evening using a host of creative and adventurous skills. Build and create a fire, cook marshmallows and learn about first aid. Essential skills for everyday life.

MENTRUS A MELYS

EVERYONE loves chocolate, but have you tasted the best chocolate in the world? A great project creating chocolate bars using the expertise of local company 'Coco Pzazz' and selling them to families and the public. What's not to like?

Assessment and Progress

Effective assessment and progress is vital to ensuring we achieve our school's vision. Assessment and progress are part of every teaching and learning experience at Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd which include self-assessment, peer assessment, teacher feedback and individual learner assessments. We use a range of evidence-based assessment strategies to enable each individual learner to progress at an appropriate pace. This allows us to build a holistic picture of each child's progress. Pupils work with their teachers to understand their progress and identify the next step in their learning journey. We challenge the pupils, support them and reflect on progress over time.

Principles of Progression

Our school curriculum is underpinned by the principles of progression which describe what it means for learners to make progress within the 6 areas of learning and experience, and we consider progress within the 6 areas versus the statements of what matters. Our assessment arrangements ensure active engagement between learners and teachers and are based on ongoing reflection, what the next step is and what needs to be done to ensure that every child reaches their full potential. We believe we can achieve this by 'aiming high' and doing so 'hand in hand' with all stakeholders of the school.

Religion, Values and Ethics

Religion, values and ethics (RVE) is a statutory requirement of the Curriculum for Wales and is mandatory for all learners from ages 3 to 16. There is no parental right to request that a child is withdrawn from RVE in the Curriculum for Wales. As RVE is a locally determined subject, the agreed syllabus specifies what should be taught in RVE within the local authority and our curriculum will reflect this guidance.

Relationship and Sexuality Education RSE

Our school curriculum embraces the guidance in the RSE Code. Our RSE provision will have a positive and empowering role in our learners’ education and will play a vital role in supporting them to realise the four purposes as part of a whole-school approach. Helping learners to form and maintain a range of relationships, all based on mutual trust and respect, is the foundation of RSE. These relationships are critical to the development of emotional well-being, resilience and empathy.

Evaluating our curriculum

Our school curriculum will be continually reviewed to ensure it meets the needs of our learners and realises the vision of our school. Throughout the year a range of self-evaluation activities will be organised to evaluate our understanding of the effectiveness of our curriculum and the required needs. We will work within our school, across the cluster and in partnership with governors, the regional consortia and the local authority, to ensure a high quality learning continuum. We and the cluster have a transition plan that promotes continuity of learning and appropriate progress.
