Chinese Major and Minor
The Chinese major / minor is designed to sharpen students' language skills and cross-cultural awareness and to deepen their understanding of contemporary China as a global political, economic, cultural force.
Rigorous Curriculum
The Chinese Studies program offers a rigorous, well-rounded curriculum comprised of four key components: learning the Chinese language, understanding Chinese culture and society, developing a global perspective and critical thinking skills, and experiencing cultural immersion through intensive study in China.
Willie Thompson, Class 2016, won the Silver Prize (the highest prize for his level) at the Atlanta Jiangsu Cup Chinese Speech Competition which was held at Emory University, in November 2014.
Chinese Language Courses
The Chinese Studies Program is the ONLY HBCU offering four years of Chinese language training in the United States. At the heart of the program is a communicative approach based upon the most current and effective pedagogical practices in the US, including the use of computer technology, digital resources, and a language laboratory. We offer Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced level Chinese courses, as well as courses in Conversational and Business Chinese.
Our Faculty
Understanding Chinese Culture & Society
The Chinese Studies Program offers the following content courses: Chinese Culture Through Film (Chinese 210), and Modern Chinese Literature (Chinese 331). In addition, the program sponsors special events such as the Chinese Lunar New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, and Chinese Club activities.

Study Abroad in China
The Chinese Studies Program provides various opportunities for students to explore Chinese culture while studying Mandarin Chinese in an immersive environment. Students can participate in our Summer-, Semester- or Year-long Study Abroad Programs in both China and Taiwan, and receive academic credit for the major/minor. Scholarships are available for every participant.
China Forum
China Forum is an indispensable platform for Chinese Studies. Scholars, public figures, and policy makers from the U.S. government come to Morehouse to give speeches. These speakers form an integral component of the course work offered by the Chinese Studies Program. China Forum not only inspires students to learn more about China's history and society but also motivates them to study Mandarin Chinese with diligence and purpose.
