What is a Social Story?
A social story is a tool used used to help children with autism in social situations.
The first step in creating a social story is deciding on the situation you want to create the story for.
Next you want to identify any and all people who would be involved in the situation.
- Teachers, Student, Parents, Siblings, Grandparents...anyone you can think of!
Then you will want to think about any unusual stimuli that might occur during the situation.
- Such as changes in lights or loud noise.
Now you will break the situation down into steps.
- Steps should be simple and specific.
Then you will want to add images that will be beneficial to the story.
- Clipart
- Personal Images
- Drawings
Now it's time to write the story.
- Write from the student's point of view! Use a first person narrative, and put yourself in your student's shoes as you write out the text for the story.
- Use simple and clear language while you write the story. Do not use vocabulary that the student is not exposed to on a regular basis.
After the text is written, it's time to add the images.
Embed the pictures you gathered earlier into the written document. Make sure you have a good balance of text and images. After you add the images, read through the story to make sure the placement of the images makes sense.
Now edit the story as necessary!
Check for appropriate reading level, vocabulary, picture quality, and any other characteristics that may cause the student difficulties in understanding.
Now you're ready to read the social story with your child!
As you read, check that he/she understands each item, and make adjustments as needed.
Finally, don't forget to reflect!
After reading, determine how successful the story was and if it can be used again. Your reflection will guide you in creating future social stories with success and ease!
