The march to the end April Showers bring SpringFest, New Student clubs, may flowers and graduates

The cool temperatures, combined with late sleet and incessant hard rain kept flowers from blooming at the normal time, but when they did come, it was a riot of desperately needed color on campus.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION INITIATES THE FIRST ANNUAL DAVID L. RICE DAY

Drafted by SGA member Tommy Kautzman, the first celebration of this day honoring USI’s founding President Dr. David L. Rice was Friday, April 1 in Rice Plaza. A luncheon, funded by the USI Foundation, included hot dogs, burgers, baked beans, potato salad and “Rice” crispy treats. SGA had a display of information, facts and items relating to Rice. University Archives and Special Collections created a display honoring Dr. David and Betty Rice’s service to the University.

Dr. Pitzer dropped by to spin the trivia wheel and win some SGA swag. He wowed the students with his knowledge of obscure USI history facts, letting them know he retired from USI and has lived through all of the University's history.

Students take a stab at USI's new club sport

Dr. Jason Hardgrave, Chair of the History Department, acts as the advisor and instructor of the new Fencing Club at USI. Club members meets twice a week in the Recreation, Fitness and Wellness Center to practice their skills and techniques. Hardgrave took fencing as a PE credit as an undergraduate student at the University of Wyoming. His interest led him to join the university's Fencing Club where he competed and was the champion foil fencer in 1992. He was nationally ranked with the United States Fencing Association from 1990-1992 while at the University of Wyoming. Today, he shares his love for the sport as a member of the USFA and the United States Fencing Coaches Association.

The Road to Finals

It's that time of the year when students wrap up final projects, presentations and performances. Rice Library study rooms fill up and campus fountains continue to be the main destinations for graduation photos.

SpringFest 2022

Panamanian Carnival

Student group Panas brought a colorful bit of culture to campus while hosting their USI version of a Panamanian Carnival.

The event included food, music and games, but the most important part of the Carnival is the selection of the Carnival Queen. In Panama, two queens are chosen representing each side of a town. At USI, the Queens represented UC East and UC West.

The 51st Juried Student Art Show

The Juried Student Art Show has been a staple at USI since 1970. Hosting the student art show in this professional setting gives students real-world, resumé-building experience in preparing and displaying their work, while also boosting their confidence in applying to future gallery exhibitions. The art show moved into the McCutchan Art Center and Pace Galleries the Fall Semester of 2008.

Each student may enter up to four works in any combination of media. The works are chosen for the final exhibition by an expert in the field of art, invited by the Art and Design faculty for his/her expertise and understanding of undergraduate artworks. This independent juror is brought in to assure an objective selection of artworks and awards and to provide an educational experience for students in preparation for professional careers in art. The jurying of the show is also an important aspect of this tradition because it creates a competition for the limited gallery space. Students must put forth their best work, which, in turn, raises the quality of the show overall.

USI Theatre presents "Twelfth Night"

"Twelfth Night, or What You Will" is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1601–1602 as a twelfth night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. The play centers on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola (who is disguised as Cesario) falls in love with the Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her thinking she is a man.

Archie Awards and Athletics Hall of Fame

In an evening that celebrates the accomplishments of the University of Southern Indiana student athletes, students and others received awards and honors.

Dr. Daria Sevastianova, Associate Professor of Economics, was presented the Dr. Jane Davis-Brezette Faculty Excellence Award. The award is presented to a USI faculty member who has contributed to the success of USI Athletics by mentoring student athletes and helping them achieve their goals in the classroom and beyond.
Keely Porter was recognized upon completing her 30th season as USI Women's Tennis Head Coach. She has led the Screaming Eagles to two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and 12 top-four finishes in the GLVC. Porter is the winningest coach in the history of the USI Women's Tennis Program, accumulating a record of 249-263 (.486) overall and a 118-102 (.536) record in the GLVC. She plans to retire from coaching at the end of this season.
Senior Mary Bean (Softball), a four-year starter on the USI Softball team, majoring in exercise science (pre-physical therapy), received a Screaming Eagles Pride Award. She helped lead the USI student athletes as Co-President of the USI Student Athlete Advisory Committee during the 2021-22 academic year. The senior is also a three-time Academic All-GLVC performer.
Junior Tyler Henry (Men's Basketball) also received a Screaming Eagles Pride Award. He has been a leader on the court and on campus during his two years on the USI Men's Basketball team. The business administration major is a influential force on campus as USI Black Student Union President, and he can also be seen in USI's episode of The College Tour.
Softball was recognized by the USI SAAC with the Team GPA Award (3.619)

University of Southern Indiana Athletics honored the 2022 USI Athletic Hall of Fame class, traditionally inducted during homecoming week. The class of seven individuals and one team was selected by an eight-member USI Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. Special individuals (e.g., Varsity Club members) were also eligible for nominations as well. To see a full list of winners and the upcoming 2023 Hall of Fame Class, see the press release link below.

In addition to the induction of the Hall of Fame Class of 2022, USI inducted Joanie Jost (above) and Lois Stevens (below) into the Athletic Hall of Distinction for contributions to the success of the University's varsity programs.
