Location

Niagara Falls is between Ontario, Canada, and New York, U.S. Niagara Falls consists of three falls the American, Horseshoe, and Bridal Veil Falls. The international border is right through the middle of Horseshoe Falls. The falls form at the end of the Niagara Gorge.

This is the bridge that goes from the U.S into the Canadian side. On one side to the flag is the American side and the Canadian flag is Canada if you stand in the middle you are at the border for both.

History

Niagara Falls was created by the Wisconsin glaciation about 10,000 years ago. Niagara Falls originated its name from a local Native Neutral Confederacy called the Niagagarega. The International Boundary line was drawn through Horseshoe Falls in 1819.

Barrel Brigade

The Barrel Brigade is a group of people, who dare deviled over the falls. Annie Edson Taylor was the first person, and woman to go over the falls. Annie was a poor widow, and saw the opportunity to go over the falls to make money, but she did not make as much as she hoped. She went over the falls on October 4, 1901, in a barrel she designed herself. Annie lied about her age, saying she was 42 when she actually was 63 years old. Jean Lussier was the third person to go over the falls on July 4, 1928. Instead of going in a barrel, he went in a six foot rubber ball filled with oxygen tubes. George Stathakis took the plunge on July 4, 1930. George didn't survive because his barrel was caught behind the falls for over 14 hours, but his 105 year old pet turtle Sony Boy made the trip. Red Hill Jr. went over the falls on August 5, 1951. He constructed a raft made of 13 inner tubes tied together by rope- Hill did not survive the plunge. Trotter and Martin became the first man, and woman to go over the falls in one barrel, they went over the falls on June 18, 1995.

Maid of the mist

Maid of the Mist has been a sight seeing adventure for over 150 years. Maid of the Mist began in 1846 making it the oldest American attraction. The boat can hold up to 600 passengers for a tour next to the falls. Maid of the Mist is a popular attraction, and has been visited by famous kings, queens, and celebrities.

This was the original Maid of the Mist boat used for tours of the falls in the 1800s.

Duffrin Islands are a group of on the falls connected by bridges, and foot walks. The Festival of Lights Celebration is celebrated on the Duffrin Islands. The Winter Festival is a show of 125 animated light shows, along with 3 million tree, and ground lights in the Niagara Falls parkway. More than 400,000 people visit to walk the trails, and enjoy the Niagara escarpment. Bruce Trail is the oldest, and longest marked hiking trail in Canada. Bruce Trail stretches over 885km with over 400 side trails.
