The play Spill was an amazing, eye-opening experience for me. I felt that the actors portrayed the roles they were cast in as though they had a personal connection to the story. I remember hearing about the spill, but because we lived on the opposite side of the state, the topic quickly disappeared. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance and am glad I was able to attend.
THE SPATIAL EXPERIENCE

When I first entered Constans Theatre, I was intrigued by the glass sculptures hanging in front of the windows. The way they reflected their colors onto the windows was very pretty. The weather outside was wet and cold, so stepping into the warmth of the theatre was welcoming. Once we entered the auditorium, we were seated about half way up from the stage, maybe seven or eight rows up, and in the middle section. I thought our seating was perfect. I was close enough that I could see everything clearly, but not too close that I did not have a full view of the stage. The fact that the theatre is on the smaller side made the atmosphere more intimate, which made it more enjoyable for me.
THE SOCIAL EXPERIENCE

I attended the play with my best friend from high school and some new friends I've made since arriving at the University of Florida. Seeing the play with friends is definitely the way to go. After the show was over, we all stayed and listened to the talk back. Going with people you know allows you to have an in depth discussion about all the different aspects of the show. Shared experiences contribute to the Good Life by creating common ground for people to connect on. When you know you have something in common with someone, it makes it easier to strike up a conversation and get to know them.
THE CULTURAL AND INTELLECTUAL EXPERIENCE

Before I saw the play, I did not know much about the situation. I knew that there had been a spill in the Gulf of Mexico and that it had to do with BP. I also knew about the animals being affected by the oil in the water. I was unaware of the fact that there had been an explosion and that people had died. The performance opened my eyes to the ongoing issues. I had never thought about how it affected the fishermen and the seafood industry. It also brought to my attention how the spill had come about.
THE EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE

For me, the play was very emotional. The scenes with Jason's wife were particularly heart-wrenching. There were multiple times where my eyes teared up from the intensity of the moment. The actors and actresses took each of their parts very seriously and it felt like they had experienced the heart break that these people went through. Spill provides the audience with an opportunity to have catharsis through the emotions of the actors. A viewer can almost put themselves in the lives of the effected, and feel the pain they experienced.
