Chaparrals claim back-to-back national titles

College of DuPage (IL) won the 2022 NJCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship title at the Hudson Valley Outdoor Athletic Complex in Troy, New York on Saturday.

During the three-day national meet held May 12-14, DuPage's squad accumulated 138 team points over 22 scored events. The win marks back-to-back titles and the sixth national title on the women's side in program history.

The Chaparrals' men's team also claimed back-to-back national titles at the 2022 championship, marking the third time in program history that the both the men's and women's track programs won the national title in the same year (2022, 2021, 2002).

DuPage claimed gold in seven of the 22 scored events to return the 2022 NJCAA DIII Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship to Glen Ellyn.

Road to Victory

DuPage earned national champion titles in nine total events, displaying their strongest performances on the track. Kiara Carter topped the podium in the 100m and the 200m while Alexandra Ochab won the 400m.

The DuPage women's program swept through the relay events, capturing first in the 4x100m, 4x400m, and 4x800m.

Ochab secured the title in the long jump for DuPage with a 5.35m mark while Mya Mangan won the pole vault title. The freshman cleared a height of 3.12m.

Roadrunners finish as runner-up

With a combined team score of 111 points, Rowan College - Gloucester earned a second-place finish at the 2022 NJCAA DIII Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Gloucester shined in the field events as the Roadrunners were led by Kara Knorr. The freshman earned a three national titles in the shot put (11.43m), hammer throw (34.16m), and the javelin (36.41). Knorr finished second in the discus with a 34.11m mark, behind leader Na'Shae Early from Howard (MD) who threw 37.04m.

Three other Roadrunners contributed to the teams' success on the field: Mariella Farrell (hammer throw, second; discus, fourth), Grace Vit (shot put, fifth; javelin, fifth) and Sabrina Baer (javelin, third).

The Roadrunners 4x400m team of Hailey Hartwyk, Sabrina Baer, Precious Barclift, and Ashton Wiseley finished second to DuPage with a time of 4:28.39.

Cardinals take third place

Mineral Area finished in third-place at the national meet, earning a team score of 90.

Excelling in the distance events, Mineral Area finished first and second in the 10000m run and first in the 5000m. Haley Hernandez became a national champion in both events, finishing with the time of 42:48.19 in the 10000m and 20:18.93 in the 5000m. Teammate Laura Maddox came in second in the 10000m with a 45:22.17 time. 

The Cardinals' relay teams finished second in the 4x100m and the 4x800m.

Megan Carden became the first Track & Field National Champion from SUNY Broome. Carden took first with 3,410 points in the heptathlon, besting runner-up Angelina Guevara from Suffolk CC by 384 points.
