Power, Sex & Money 1 Kings 1-11

Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalms 73:23-26
1 KINGS 2:46 - "THE KINGDOM WAS NOW FIRMLY ESTABLISHED IN SOLOMON’S HANDS."
1 Kings 3:1 - Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married his daughter.

Read 1 Kings 3:3

How did Solomon disobey God from the beginning?

You can see the cracks in the foundation of Solomon's kingdom. It was a worship problem at the core.

1 Kings 3:12 - "[God said] I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be."

What did Solomon do with this wisdom?

1 Kings 4:29 – “God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.”

1 Kings 4:32 – “He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five.”

Solomon wrote Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon.

From his own mouth he spoke:

Prov. 1:7 – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

Prov. 4:23 – “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”

Prov. 7:21-27 – “With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life. Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say. Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths. Many are the victims she has brought down; her slain are a mighty throng. Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death.”

Prov. 23:4 – “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.”

Ecclesiastes 12:12-14 – “Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body. Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole [duty] of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.”

What happened with Solomon?

The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.” He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold. Deuteronomy 17:16-17

He chose to pursue earthly power over God's ways.

He chose to pursue physical lust over God's ways.

He chose to pursue material wealth over God's ways.

1 Kings 11:1-8 – “King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter–Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been. He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech the detestable god of the Ammonites. So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done. On a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab, and for Molech the detestable god of the Ammonites. He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.”

Luke 4:5-8 - "The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.

Jesus overcame the same temptation that Solomon faced. Jesus kept worshipping his Father.

James 1:22 - "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."
James 2:14-17 - "What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."
James 3:13-16 - "Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such 'wisdom' does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice."
James 4:4 - "You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God."
God said through solomon - "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." Prov. 1:7
Will you hear & obey? Will you humbly follow your father?
